ROWAN BERRY: The lost medicinal secrets of the Tree of Life (Part 2, 2018)

ROWAN BERRY: The lost medicinal secrets of the Tree of Life (Part 2, 2018)

Rowan Berry is an all-to-forgotten Super-Food that grows wild and organic at The Orchard. The last remaining privately owned wild rowan berry grove in the USA, possibly in the world, has been dedicated to helping veterans combat PTSD for over a decade as a place for healing - not surprising given the esoteric and mystical history of the tree, known in many faiths as the Tree of Life. But that is just the tail end of a 4000 year old tradition of medicinal properties attributing to the history, lore, and traditions around this iconic super-food.

With the ability to reduce or resolve some types of Type-2 diabetes; with more antioxidants than blueberry; with more beta-C than a carrot, and with more Vitamin-C than an orange - packed into one tiny berry that ancient Greek scholars documented would add 30 years to life when added in 1/2 berry quantities twice daily - this book is a MUST READ. What's better is drinking the tea, vodka, wine, or using the soap that is created farm-to-table at THE ORCHARD.

Watch for products and publications, proceeds to preserve this orchard - the last in the United States, if not the world- by following RSOLUTIONS Learn all about the ROWAN BERRY - the lore, the traditions, and more in Tree of Life: the lost medicinal secrets of the rowan berry tree to be released Sept 21st 2019.

For a sneak peek read on....

What the Druids (cira. 4000BCE), Greeks (cira. 450BCE), and Vikings (circa. 1000ADE) seemed to have known thousands of years back about the Rowan Tree and rowan berry, modern science now proves. A rowan berry has more vitamin C and A than an entire orange[1]. It has multiple uses and benefits in living a health-conscious life:

Cancer Fighting

The high levels of antioxidants found in rowan berries make it a very powerful super-food against various chronic diseases, including cancer. Quercetin varieties and sorbic acid both act as antioxidants, preventing the harmful effects of free radicals throughout the body.... Free radicals are the dangerous byproducts of cellular metabolism that can cause healthy cells to mutate into cancerous cells, or simply perish. Therefore, incorporating rowan berry products into your diet can significantly boost your antioxidant levels....

Immunity Boost

Although rowan berries aren’t packed with a variety of vitamins, they are found to have very high to extremely-high levels of vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is a very important element in human health, as it can stimulate the production of white blood cells and act as an antioxidant as well.

The rowan berry helps improve working health-systems that reduce aging likely associated with inflammation – a leading cause of aging, arthritis, and other conditions all recently linked to inflammation. Furthermore, vitamin C is essential for a number of bodily processes, including the creation of collagen, which strengthens muscle tissue and helps to build/repair blood vessels. In a recent study, side by side patients were monitored following a minimally invasive procedure. The patient using rowan berry tea with bamboo found all incisions were healed within 48 hours, compared to 7 days as an average healing time for those not using rowan berry tea.

In another bounded-single-case study (RSOLUTIONS) a healthcare worker was tracked for illnesses over a three years period. In the third year, on the eve of “feeling” an on-coming sinuous, throat, respiratory, or stomach issue, rowan berry tea was administered. The specific dose (equal to one-half the average cup of black tea) was provided twice daily and reduced work absences by 80% compared to prior years. Due to the significant increase, the administration was removed for two months in the third year. Missed work rates elevated toward the pre-year averages. Because the body can only absorb so many vitamins at once, this case study shows clear value to healthcare professionals, teachers, or other professionals regularly exposed to contagious illness by using rowan tea or products on a regular basis.

In side by side comparison study over a two year period, weekly use of the tea (three times a week) was administered between September and April and used “as-needed” the remaining year. Subject had zero days of work missed and reported zero instances of “illness” in the two year period. Subject was regularly exposed to young children within private and public school environments. After two years of continued use, the subject reported not a single day of illness. This was confirmed with survey data from professional and personal associates familiar with the subjects relative day-to-day health and well-being. The total amount uses was slightly more than original recipes recorded by early Greeks.

Digestive Support

Fiber, which is found in moderate amounts in rowan berries, helps to facilitate digestion and reduce constipation by bulking up stool and optimizing your gastrointestinal system. rowan berry has long been suggested as a solution for not only IBS, but may even reverse diabetes in some patients.

Furthermore, the organic compounds in rowan berries are thought to directly improve any symptoms of diarrhea, although the exact mechanism of this is still unclear to modern sciences. The general understanding is that the various anti-inflammatory compounds of the berry help reduce inflammation which might explain the effectiveness against IBS. Multiple prior cultures used the rowan berry as ancient solutions to stomach ache and other infliction affecting the digestive track including being used in ancient remedies for resolving hemorrhoids. The common theme in the science literature of ancient and modern naturopathic research being that rowan berry reduces inflammation - a possible root-cause to a number of life altering chronic illnesses.

Fights Respiratory Infection

In traditional medicine, rowan berry juice was used to reduce inflammation of the respiratory tract, improve sore throats, and relieve asthma and congestion. Some of this may be due to the antioxidant compounds that also act as anti-inflammatory agents, while vitamin C is known to soothe the symptoms of asthma. Whatever the direct links are, rowan berries have been trusted for generations as a home remedy for respiratory ailments. In a clinical trial (RSOLUTIONS) rowan berry demonstrated significant reduction in chest cold symptoms within 24 hours of patients reporting or demonstrating coughs. This included severe respiratory coughs in youth and adults. ...

Inflammation Reduction

In a clinical trial (RSOLUTIONS), rowan berry with bamboo was made into a tea. In this case the patient underwent surgery. Within 48 hours of surgery the surgical tape was removed for changing and the nurse documented that the wounds were 90 percent closed; the average healing time for this procedure is 7 days. Bamboo is generally thought to promote healing of open wounds, but this was a significant finding.

In a separate case, bamboo with rowan berry was administered daily for two weeks, then three times a week. Over the course of a month, the patient experienced a 60% increase in hair growth (scalp) and had noticeably reduced balding based on multiple observations with four research observers. Surprisingly, following treatment the hair growth had continued despite reducing to a rowan-bamboo mix only once a month with rowan berries three times a week. This correlates with some findings that hair loss can be reversed with the right combination of vitamins and scalp therapies...

In a two year long comparative study, (FOLLOW RSOLUTIONS) rowan berry was used in a second year intervention. The case participant effectively participated in extensive outdoor labor in the first years for a total of two days. Swelling was reported and documented by medical professionals as a diagnosis of “trigger finger” resulting from inflammation. In this situation, the tendons became so inflamed they were not able to remain in the slight channel between the finger bones at the knuckle.

It took over eight months for total healing to be documented. In the second year, with no repeat exposure to the exact work conducted, the patient was provided rowan-and-chamomile tea and rowan-bamboo tea. With bamboo being heavy in silica and Rowan known to reduce inflammation, the patient reported one day of inflammation symptoms of trigger finger within two weeks of expose to the activity. Over the course of four months following trigger-finger symptoms were documented less than three times; this compared to chronic daily pain and trigger finger symptoms documented over the same four month period following the identical work regiment the year prior.

While it is unclear what compounds of rowan berry directly reduce inflammation, the evidence indicated that not only did ancient cultures rely on rowan berry but modern research and clinical evidence continues to support a hypothesis that rowan berry is a major factor in reducing inflammation. In 2017 the New York Times reported that the primary common symptom among multiple ailments of aging was inflammation; as a result a hypothesis has formed if inflammation is the actual cause of diagnosed ailments (arthritis, cancers, heart conditions, and more were included in the report). With the positive reduction in inflammation, continued research warrants examination of this unique and nearly extinct berry.

Antibacterial Activity

Sorbic acid has been directly linked to reducing the effects of microbial and bacterial agents on the skin and in the body. Therefore, in cosmetic use, Rowan Berry extracts are occasionally used as an antibacterial and antimicrobial booster. In recent laboratory research recent evidence suggests that Rowan Berry may provide a viable solution, or at minimum agent, to combating MRSA:

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that is a member of the Firmicutes, and is frequently found in the human respiratory tract and on the skin. Although S. aureus is not always pathogenic, it is a common cause of skin infections (e.g. boils), respiratory disease (e.g. sinusitis), and food poisoning…. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant forms of pathogenic S. aureus (e.g. MRSA) is a worldwide problem in clinical medicine...

In the present study, wild rowanberries... were characterized for their phenolic composition and screened for antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiadhesive activities. ... The phenolics derived from wild rowanberries were significantly effective at inhibiting lipid oxidation both in liposomes and in emulsions, especially when assessed by inhibition of the formation of hexanal (86-97% inhibition depending on concentration)....

Both wild and cultivated rowanberry phenolic exhibited a bacteriostatic effect toward Staphylococcus aureus. Typhimurium, whereas both Zoltaja- and Granatnaja-derived phenolics retarded Escherichia coli growth. The phenolic extracts of wild rowanberries and Burka showed an inhibitory effect on hemagglutination of E. coli HB101 (pRR7).[3]PMID: 21038891

In an ongoing longitudinal case study, the presence of boils on a subject skin were completely gone within 48 hours of using Rowan Berry soap; on-going studies are monitoring the patient who claims regular outbreaks do to staph and ingrown hair for an overall hypothesis that Rowan Berry will effectively reduce or eliminate this chronic problem saving both medical and emotional challenges for the patient. As such the more correct name for the Rowan tree should be the Healer's Tree.

Given that Viruses, bacteria and fungi are all kept at bay by foods with high nutritional value, the use of the rowan would have been excellent healing practice. In fact, many legends attribute magical properties to rowan berries; for example, the Irish 'Quicken tree of Dubhous' was said to produce berries which could transform a man of 100 to 30 years of age, if three were eaten. And another Irish legend tells of a rowan whose berries could sustain one with the strength of nine meals (2019, testing underway currently).

Medicinal

Many articles and studies are suggesting that autoimmune diseases may be caused by viruses and bacteria. Given the evidence presented that Rowan berries have high antibacterial properties, there is further speculation that Rowan Berries may provide medicinal solutions. Rowan berry, while known for its bitter taste to lay people, has been scientifically analyzed and found to consist of over five identified antioxidant with trace elements of two additional within the berries (dependent on strain and origin of the particular berry tree). Rowan Berries include antimicrobial elements and are known to fight bacterial infection, which means they preserve well. However, their unique antioxidant composition is what captures most research interest. Rowan berries contain anthocyanins, tannins, polyphenolic compounds, and flavonols, including various types of quercetin[4] and rutin[5].

The two most effective berry extracts, from black currant and rowanberry, inhibited a-glucosidase with IC50 values respectively of 20 and 30ml/g GAE/ml and were as effective as the pharmaceutical inhibitor, acarbose. These berry extracts differed greatly in their polyphenol composition: black currant was dominated by anthocyanins (70% of total) whereas rowanberry was enriched in chlorogenic acids (65% total) and had low levels of anthocyanins… rowanberry extracts potentiated the inhibition caused by acarbose and could replace the inhibition lost by reducing the acarbose dose. Black currant and rowanberry extracts were effective inhibitors. Rowan berry is an effective inhibitor of x-glucosidase with IC(50) values 20 and 30.

Unlike most fruits and vegetables with just one or two antioxidants, the unique characteristics of rowan berry have earned it recognition as a Super-Food. This tiny berry packs quite a nutritious punch!

Rowan berries are argued to actually not only prevent but possibly reverse the effective of Type 2 Diabetes per the research by Boath, Stewart & McDougal1 (2012[6]). Rowan berry which has a higher ORAC value than blueberry, green peppers, carrots and many others items which earns its place on the list of very tiny, Super-Food such as chia[7]. Further it has been demonstrated effective in significant reduction in triglyceride levels in patients using berry fruits to combat diabetes symptoms[8].

Naturopathic

There have been a wide variety of naturopathic uses for the berry. It has been demonstrated to prevent scurvy and was in a dose of a "half a berry measured" per day by wealthy Greeks in circa 400BC as an early form of vitamin A, D and C supplement[9]. The fruits have been used in traditional Austrian medicine for some time as a tea, syrup, jelly or liqueur for the treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, fever, infections, colds, flu, rheumatism and gout.

Recognized from WebMD to the Mayo Clinic to Celtic-based naturopathic practitioners, the antioxidants are known to suppress sinuous infection inflammation, reduce respiratory inflammation, intestinal and other afflictions. Drinking tea made of rowan flowers and dried rowan berries is recommended in the case of liver, kidney and digestive tract disorders and to alleviate coughing and bleeding. Scientific research has proven that rowan berry tea reduces the accumulation of lipids in the liver and blood cholesterol levels, and has an antibacterial effect. In a recent clinical trial, patients suffering from suspected Celiac autoimmune disordered reported alleviation of many stomach symptoms with use of rowan berry as a tea; and in extreme cases it reduced pain, bleeding, and swelling when taken in whole within 12 hours.

Rowan berries in folk medicine were said to be “laxative, diuretic, and to prevent scurvy” all of which were probably true as the berries contain vitamin C and antioxidants. The fruit contains sorbitol, which can be used as a sugar substitute by diabetics.

The rowanberries studied here (cvs. Burka, Dessertnaja, Eliit, Granatnaja, Kubovaja, Rosina, Rubinovaja, Titan, and Zholtaja) have high antioxidant and phenolic contents. The phenolic content varied between 550 and 1014 mg/100 g of fresh weight in sweet rowanberries, whereas 846 and 717 mg were found in the well-characterized bilberry and lingonberry, respectively. Anthocyanins (6-80 mg) were mainly found from berries of hybrid cultivars. Of the other phenolics, chlorogenic (29-160 mg) and neochlorogenic (34-104 mg) acids constituted the major fraction in all rowanberries, the concentrations almost equaling those present in coffee. Antioxidant capacities of rowanberries were high, as measured with FRAP (61-105 micromol of Fe2+/g) and DPPH (21.3-9.7 g/g DPPH) methods. Principal component analysis was able to separate the cultivars of different origin into clusters on the basis of their phenolic profiles. PMID: 16390186[10]

"Essentially, science is beginning to catch up here and realize that there is good evidence to show that folk medicine was right, Rowanberries have antibacterial properties..." - Dr J Paul Rand, at a recent presentation to founding members of the Rowan Orchard Product start-ups (winery, vodka, gin, liquor, tea, soap, and more).

Modern Breast Feeding

In coming sections the relationship of the Tree of Life and Rowan Tree in multiple cultures and faith is examined more closely. But modern imagery of breast feeding mothers seem to connect the concept in a beautiful figurative imagery. Research, however, suggests that Rowan Berry significantly increases the production of breast milk.

In comparative studies (FOLLOW RSOLUTIONS), Rowan Berry tea made with Rowan Berry increased breast milk supply for nursing mothers[11]. Research also shows that the fermentation[12] process actually increases antimicrobial functioning of rowan berry aiding in its ability to ward of staph infection, MRSA, E.coli, and other possible harmful risks to a mother during breastfeeding. Early clinical results indicate the soap made of Rowan berry reduces staff infection significantly; cleared dermatitis in less than 12 hours; and reduces ingrown hairs, and other skin infections by 60%.

Often the berries and the bark and leaves are added to healing mixtures to ensure their success. Modern Europeans often turn their nose up at Pharma cough syrup so long as they have access to organic Rowan berry liquor, vodka or schnapps – not as an everyday drink of choice but as a long-known tonic for good health when afflicted with a sore throat, cough, chest, abdominal inflammation, sinus, or even hemorrhoid flare ups. But, this is nothing new. This has been recently tested and determined that the fermentation process increases the antimicrobial and free-radical fighting antioxidants supporting this home remedy as being more than an old wife’s tale[13].....
