Every year, the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting brings together the top experts in the field from around the world.
This weekend, ALK was proud to present new Phase 3 data evaluating the efficacy and safety of ragweed sublingual allergy immunotherapy (SLIT) tablets in children age 5-17 with ragweed allergic rhinitis (hay fever) with or without conjunctivitis (AR/C). The study demonstrated that treatment with the SLIT-tablets significantly improved AR/C symptoms and decreased use of medication compared to placebo. Overall, treatment was well tolerated and discontinuation rates due to adverse events were low. The study is the largest allergy immunotherapy clinical trial conducted to date in children with AR/C.
Allergic rhinitis affects millions of children,[i] and those with ragweed allergies plus conjunctivitis may not get complete relief from currently available treatments. SLIT-tablets are currently available for adults. Treatment had not previously been evaluated in a pediatric population. Now, with findings from this study, we better understand allergy immunotherapy as a potential treatment option for children.
At ALK, we remain dedicated in our commitment to improving outcomes for people with environmental allergies, and we’re hopeful this research will advance understanding of sublingual allergy immunotherapy for pediatric patients.
