It's been a while since I posted here, so pardon my flurry of updates. First up, my wonderful summer internship at Shelterforce Magazine! They gave me the opportunity to pursue complex and inspiring stories about affordable housing. So I investigated Kingston, New York's historic decision to opt-in to the Emergency Tenant Protection Act, becoming the first upstate county in NY to provide rent stabilization, and the first county in NY to take it one step further by voting for a rent reduction. My story highlights the efforts of tenants and organizers, and examines how it is that the rent reduction has not yet been implemented. An enormous thank you to Miriam Axel-Lute and the entire team at Shelterforce for making me feel welcome and supported. https://lnkd.in/e7MH-5ud

????♀? Raise your hand if you’ve read an insightful article from Shelterforce this year. ???? I know I’ve personally relied on its 200+ articles from the past year to navigate a lot of emerging issues in the housing and community development space— including most recently, a great series on climate and insurance issues. ???? As a new board member, I am calling on my network to help Shelterforce raise $75,000. Every contribution fuels impactful journalism and strengthens our field. Shelterforce tracked down almost three dozen housing-related ballot measures that were up for vote earlier this month. In more than half of the measures, the outcomes will benefit housing efforts, tenants, and/or homeowners in some way. But there were some big loses. "The housing supply crisis in the United States has hit low- to moderate-income households the hardest. While the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program plays a valuable role in increasing housing supply for low-income families, there is no similar source for moderate-income households."
