Dear frustrated leader, It is common for nonprofit organizations to have a very operationally-involved board at the beginning of the organization's lifespan. In this phase, board members lend their expertise for everything from Human Resources to Marketing because the organization cannot yet afford staff or service providers with that expertise. However, as the organization grows, sometimes board members have a hard time stepping back. Another situation that lends itself to creating an operationally-involved board is financial crisis or employee complaints. Understandably, board members step in to help "right the ship". However, they often struggle to let go of the reigns once the crisis is over. So, what do you do when that is the case? I typically recommend three things that my experience as both a nonprofit CEO and consultant have taught me. 1. First, have an honest conversation with your board chair and executive committee about your concerns. Sometimes, they just don't know that they are overstepping and other times they are relieved to find that you do not need them at that level. 2. Establish consistent chains of communication. At the beginning of my tenure, I sent monthly updates to my board to ensure that they were abreast of the key happenings in all aspects of the organization's operations. When they saw that I was on top of things, they became more confident in my leadership and less inclined to get involved operationally. 3. Hire a respected and experienced consultant to conduct board training to reset and re-establish the board's role. Doing this made a big difference for me as a CEO and the organizations that I have supported as a consultant. Board involvement in daily operations is a challenge. However, it can change with the right strategies. Do not settle. Step up and start the change management process. You can do this! Strong leaders have a plan in place for such a transition, regardless of how long they plan to stay with the organization.
