2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the Dart Awards, and for the next 30 days, we are looking back at the award-winning stories and exceptional reporting that have come to define trauma-informed journalism. 2012 to 2017 saw various stories of resilience. Reporters covered the lives of survivors in the aftermath of unimaginable atrocities. Stories ranged from a family seeking justice for their son who died because of systemic issues in the National Hockey League to the persisting impacts of the aftermath of 9/11 on survivors. Various news organizations collaborated to document one man's journey of uncovering his connection to a massacre in 1982. Other stories included a teenager who was shot for being black and the impacts of gun violence on staff, students, and families at a high school in Chicago. A four-part investigative print and multimedia series highlighted the lives of undocumented immigrants impacted by the humanitarian crisis at the borders in Texas. Journalists revealed systemic issues in the American military and in a university, including the impact of moral injury on American soldiers and how a year-long investigation into a university's policies regarding sexual assault reports led to extensive policy changes. The reporters illustrated the capacity for communities to unite and support one another in the wake of these horrific acts and the transforming power of finding hope amid insurmountable despair. Reporters tackled a variety of topics during this period, ranging from the impacts of mass destruction on survivors to first-person narratives about rape. Domestic violence and systemic issues within the American military were also central themes. All the stories carried one common feature: Reporters centered the voices of the survivors at the heart of their stories, some of the world's most horrific atrocities, showing how ordinary people made sense of their trauma and pain and how they found a path forward. Dart's Director of Research Dr. Elana Newman participated at the ScienceWriters2024 Conference in Raleigh, N.C. in the "Trauma-Informed Reporting: An Interactive Workshop" session on Nov. 8. Organized and moderated by Emily Sohn and Bethany Brookshire, Newman alongside Dawn Fallik (University of Delaware, STEM reporter and journalism professor) and Naseem Miller (The Journalist’s Resource, senior health editor), engaged in a highly invigorating 3-hour workshop on trauma-related reporting with 40 science writers. These deeply reported stories celebrated the resilience of sources who had experienced incredible loss, pain, and grief and began to further expand on the power and purpose of ethical, trauma-aware reporting. Reporting Institute on Forced Migration and Children in Europe Children are at the forefront of a historic global refugee crisis, displaced by the millions in active conflict zones and countries decimated by violence, persecution and poverty. While children make up less than a third of the global population, they represent 41% of the world’s refugees and their needs and experiences are often overlooked, oversimplified or sensationalized by the news media. This three-day training institute will bring together Europe-based journalists with leading researchers, clinicians, child development experts and practitioners for expert briefings, panels, workshops and conversations on how to produce science-informed, ethical and effective stories on children and families affected by forced migration and displacement.
