Meet Oluwatumininu Adeeko, an international student from Nigeria and a proud 2023 graduate of YSU with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and is pursuing a PhD in Material Science and Engineering! Her journey was shaped by hands-on coursework, impactful internships, and skills like networking that gave her an edge in her field. Her advice to current students? “Take full advantage of your college years—attend events, network, and create opportunities where you see a need. Highlighting excellence in STEM: Our students played a pivotal role in hosting the 2024 International Programming Contest. This year, 12 universities, including Carnegie Mellon and Penn State, joined us to tackle competitive programming challenges. Our Master’s students in Computing and Information Systems shined as event volunteers, while faculty members served as co-site directors and provided vital support. We’re so proud of our Sokolov Honors College students who showcased their incredible research at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in Kansas City! From predicting tennis outcomes using Google’s PageRank, to exploring stem cell therapies for radiation-induced skin reactions. These students presented groundbreaking work across biology, mathematics, and physics. They connected with peers nationwide, attended inspiring talks, and learned from educators like Erin Gruwell of Freedom Writers fame. Pioneering Progress: Student Spotlight At Innovation Day 2024, Joshua Porter, a second-year electrical engineering master’s student, showcased his cutting-edge research in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology! Under the mentorship of Professors Vamsi Borra and Frank Li, Joshua’s thesis focuses on enhancing data collection across industries using BLE-connected sensors. This breakthrough could streamline measurements in controlled environments, from temperature to humidity. Joshua shared insights into the challenges and triumphs of his journey.
