Did you know that one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions come from our food systems? ?? Today at #COP29, the focus is on food, agriculture, and water. From deforestation for farmland to household food waste, our current approach to food production and consumption has a major impact on the climate. Raychel Santo of WRI Food looks at how next-generation #NDCs offer a unique opportunity to transform food systems for a sustainable future. By adopting ambitious targets for both production and demand, countries can take action to reduce emissions, restore degraded lands, improve food security, and support farmers in the face of climate change. ?? We're delighted to see our Alistair Dale feature in November's edition of Public Sector Catering Magazine, talking about the launch of our new low-carbon meals in secondary school menus across the UK. Working alongside partner Coolfood — an initiative run by not-for-profit organisation, World Resources Institute (WRI) — we're transforming school catering to help cut food-related emissions and support a sustainable future for the education sector. ?? Countries can no longer afford to ignore food and agriculture if they want to effectively address the climate crisis. Denmark is showing leadership in this space. This year, the Danish government finalized a groundbreaking new ag and climate policy that will: ?? tax GHG emissions from livestock production ?? restore natural landscapes ?? pay farmers to reduce nitrogen pollution This is significant, since agricultural emissions account for one-quarter of global emissions - yet so far governments devote only a fraction of the efforts to reducing these emissions as they do for fossil fuels. It's time for more countries to devise inclusive, collaborative policies to reduce the climate impact of food from farm to fork. ?? We're excited to see Mohawk Medbuy Corporation making the Coolfood Pledge available to their Members! This move will help more hospitals across Canada start reducing their food-related GHG emissions. Special thanks to Nourish / Nourrir for their partnership in making this possible!
#MohawkMedbuy is the first shared services organization in Canada to support the Coolfood Pledge by inviting our MEALsource Members to commit to Coolfood’s target of reducing food-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2030. We explored the pledge today as part of our #Nutrition virtual Fall Advisory meeting, which brings together Nutrition #SupplyChain professionals from across Canada. Helping to scale the Coolfood Pledge is the next step in our recently announced partnership with national not-for-profit Nourish / Nourrir . MMC’s MEALsource Program serves more than 60 hospitals. By supporting Coolfood, we’re furthering our commitment to help reduce the climate impact of the food our Members serve.? ? ?? DYK: small changes make a huge difference in determining food choices. Drexel University and Aramark have been testing menu interventions to reduce their food-related carbon emissions. Here's what they found: ? Limited time offers for plant-rich dishes and coordinated marketing efforts significantly influence consumer choices ?? Offering plant-rich dishes as the default option (with the choice to add meat) drove a 44% reduction in carbon impact at the grill station. ?? Simply moving beef entrees away from the primary stations showed a significant reduction in carbon emissions per meal. TLDR: Convenience and cravings were key factors influencing entrée choices. Customers expressed similar satisfaction rates when plant-rich dishes were front and center. Read more about the plant-forward menu interventions: https://bit.ly/4huIik5 ?? credit: Aramark
