The seminar “The Wound Balance Concept: Leveraging BIOMES (SM) for Early Recognition of Chronic Wounds” presented through WoundCon was exceptional! CNA’s can use the BIOMES metric to communicate resident/client concerns in a way that is clear and objective. “I’m concerned about the wound because of these factors, X, Y, Z.” Communication and team collaboration from CNA to advanced provider can streamline with clear objectives and proactive observations. CNA’s can be trained to be obervant for wound prevention and healing.

The seminar: “Healing Beyond the Surface: The Role of Skin Health and Patient Engagement in Advanced Wound Recovery” presented by WoundCon was highly informative regarding advances in wound treatments including but not limited to 3D bioprinting of skin tissue. Key take aways for CNA’s since we are we are usually the most prominent care point in direct hands on care- Be conscious observers not just of the wound, but of the entire system-how is your home care client or resident functioning in their biopsychosocial environment- What does this look like? Monitoring hydration and diet-are they eating less or not at all-diet plays a large factor in wound healing, with an emphasis on protein-can you have your resident/client drink protein shakes and suppliments if they are not eating regular meals. Be protein proactive! What does their environment look like-are the shoes you are putting on them to prevent fall risks while walking making the wound worse with chafing and pressure? Are they being engaged socially-lonliness has been shown to increase wound healing times. And the last point-be informed-ask questions, join collaboration networks, and attend continuing education seminars like WoundCon.

Another facinating presentation from WoundCon CNA’s encounter residents in post-acute, long term care and in home care that have had amputations due to a variety of reasons: military service related injuries, complications due to diabetic wounds, trauma, etc. In 20 years as a CNA, I have never had any specific continuing education on how to psychogically support residents and clients who have had amputations of limb or digits. We need to be educated on phantom limb pain and how it might impact our residents behaviors and their day to day engagement. We need to have conversations on limb loss grief and body image and how limb loss affects “wholeness”. We need to be sensitive to the residents who have had mastectomies-as it does impact sense of self, feminity, wholeness and body image. Mrs Jones might fight against a CNA who is assisting in hygiene support because she is uncomfortable with her body image, and post surgical scars and limb loss-not because she is “just being difficult” as we have often heard being said about some residents during showers/baths. Let’s continue this conversation…
