Happy #VirtualRealityDay! Today, Virtual Reality is used for all sorts of purposes, including career awareness and training. In fact, earlier this year, we awarded $5,000 grants to 15 local workforce boards to purchase Virtual Reality equipment, which students and jobseekers can use to explore careers. In these pictures, you can see Virtual Reality tech in use at #NCWorks Career Centers in Henderson (Kerr-Tar) and Raleigh (Capital Area), for career fields like #Welding, Hotel Front Desk, and Robotics. We want to salute our DWS #NCWorks Veterans Services staff and partners who organized two emergency “Stand Down” Events to support #veterans affected by Hurricane Helene – in Burnsville (Yancey County) on Nov. 13 and in Franklin (Macon County) on Nov. 14. A total of more than 180 veterans were able to receive a variety of services, including haircuts, legal assistance, employment services, housing, medical and mental health support, VA benefits, and shelter assistance. Thanks to generous donations, our staff distributed cold-weather gear, clothing, small grills and charcoal, hygiene kits, shoes, boots, socks, blankets, and canned goods, as well. These successful Stand Downs were among many events coinciding with #EmployAVeteranWeek. It's our privilege to serve North Carolina's veterans! On November 15, 2024, the #NCWorks Career Center in Cumberland County organized a celebration in honor of Native American Heritage Month, offering an immersive experience that highlighted the rich traditions and culture of Native American communities. The event featured an array of cultural expressions, including Native American dance (such as the #Lumbee demonstration pictured), song, and drumming performances by the Cumberland County Culture Class, a local group dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and practices of indigenous people. These performances provided attendees with a vibrant display of traditional art forms, including various styles of dance, vocal music, and drumming, which are central to Native American culture and spirituality. Additionally, the event showcased food associated with the local Native American population, offering participants a unique culinary experience. These foods are often deeply rooted in regional traditions and can include ingredients such as corn, beans, squash, wild rice, venison, fish and various berries, reflecting the agricultural and hunting practices of the local tribes. The celebration was not only a moment of cultural expression, but also an opportunity for education, raising awareness about the heritage of Native American peoples and their ongoing contributions to the community. NCWorks - Cumberland County provided a welcoming space for attendees to connect with Native American traditions while also fostering greater understanding and appreciation of the area's indigenous history.
