An avian flu outbreak killed more than 17,000 elephant seals, a new study says, including 97% of pups. It was the first report of transmission between marine mammals. Likely more than half the reproductive population died due to the virus. “It will take decades before the numbers are back to the 2022 population size,”?says co-author Valeria Falabella of WCS Argentina. ?? Scientific Days & Steering Committee of One Health Indian Ocean (dP OHOI) We are excited to share that the Scientific Days of the One Health Indian Ocean Partnership are currently taking place from October 23-25, 2024, in Antananarivo, Madagascar! This event brings together 25 institutions and partners from 8 countries across the southwest Indian Ocean: La Réunion, Mayotte (France), Mauritius, Rodrigues, Comoros, Seychelles, Madagascar, Tanzania, South Africa, and Mozambique. ?? The dP OHOI focuses on studying infectious risks to humans and animals in this region, which faces high epidemic threats. The mission is to improve prevention and control through an integrated, interdisciplinary "One Health" approach. Key research activities and findings, from Interreg VI PRERISK-OI and AFRICAM Madagascar, will be presented. The scientific days will serve as a great opportunity to gather working groups to set research priorities for 2025. ???????? One of the ways WCS is contributing to initiative is through AFRICAM Madagascar, that aim to develop and strengthen disease surveillance capacities for priority or emerging zoonotic diseases in Madagascar, where WCS, Madagascar National Parks play a major role in implementing wildlife disease surveillance. Our patrollers use the SMART software, adapted to SMART Health, to monitor and report any anomalies in wildlife, aiming to detect signs of diseases early. Currently, this project is piloted in Ranomafana National Park and expanding to Makira. ?? Aristide Andrianarimisa and Lovasoa Rabarisoa (WCS Madagascar), Diego Montecino-Latorre and Lucy Keatts (WCS Health Program, Bronx, NY, USA), Ollier Duranton F. Andrianambinina and Antso Razakafamantanantsoa (Madagascar National Parks) participated on it. ?? https://bit.ly/4eWEWEY #OneHealth #Research #IndianOcean #WildlifeHealth #WCSMadagascar

An inspiring group of 16 fellows from 14 ASEAN countries came together to kick off the Pandemic Prevention Leadership Initiative (PPLI) led by the Wildlife Conservation Society. The PPLI is strengthening capacity and collaborative approaches in Southeast Asia to address threats to global health security and biodiversity conservation posed by wildlife trade. The fellowship program supports the development of a network of leaders from multiple disciplines across #ASEAN to work together and apply a One Health approach to address the spillover of pathogens from live animal markets and supply chains, from prevention through response. https://lnkd.in/eJbGHMg4 #OneHealth #PandemicPrevention #Biodiversity #Conservation #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #UCDavis #EpiEcos Dibesh Karmacharya, Ph.D. Amanda Fine Pranav Pandit Terra Kelly Ahmad Faisal Sofi Mardiah Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga Carrie S. A major outcome of #cop16colombia was the adoption of the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health—an important milestone for advancing the One Health approach in countries like Colombia. The plan’s recommendations closely align with Colombia’s needs, including the establishment of a multi-ministerial, cross-sectoral coordination mechanism, the development of policies that integrate biodiversity and health, and enhanced collaboration to strengthen planning, diagnosis, and surveillance capacity. I’m incredibly honored to work alongside such an amazing team making this vision a reality WCS Colombia Wildlife Conservation Society.

For Better Global Health Outcomes, Join the Progress and Embrace the Change It’s #onehealthday 2024, and while some are still debating the need for a holistic health approach, others have been on the ground for the last 20 years, actively working, learning, and adapting. It’s time to join the progress and embrace the change. https://lnkd.in/eiGtNa2x #OneHealth #biodiversity #conservation #ecologicalintegrity

Mitigating the polycrisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and disease requires a #OneHealth approach. #OneHealthDay2024 There is an urgent need to fully integrate biodiversity conservation and ecosystem health into public health and future #OneHealth approaches. The Wildlife Conservation Society believes in and advocates for primary prevention. 3 key actions would cost less than 1/20th the value of lives lost each year to emerging viral zoonoses, with co-benefits (Bernstein et al. 2022): 1.?Better management of wildlife trade 2.?Reduced deforestation 3. Increased wildlife surveillance To prevent pandemics and support achievement of the UN SDGs, we must fully and equitably integrate the environmental sector into global #OneHealth and public health approaches and embrace prevention at source. The Berlin Principles warn of the dire consequences of ignoring the interconnected health issues.
