Making the Leap: Academia to Biotech Great to see everyone who came out March 19 for our Women in Bio – Seattle career panel on Transitions: Academia-to-Industry! Hosted by Life Sciences Washington, the event featured an insightful discussion with panelists Tina Albershardt, PhD (Moonlight Bio), Namita Hattangady (Immunome, Inc.), Berry Hatton, PhD (Galvanize Therapeutics), Kaitlyn LaCourse (Bruker Spatial Biology), and Lindsay Pino (Talus Bio) on career transitions, industry expectations, and hiring trends. Moderated by Jenny Waters, the conversation provided key takeaways for those making the leap from academia to biotech: ?? Key Insights: ?? Apply early—speed matters! “I used to obsess over my cover letter and applied late—by then, there were already 100+ applicants,” Namita Hattangady shared. ?? Referrals drive hiring. While resumes may not get noticed, “If someone I trust recommends a candidate, I take a look,” Lindsay Pino said. ?? Find the right culture fit. “If you love chaos and fast decisions, startups are great. But if you want 9-to-5, think twice,” Berry Hatton advised. ?? Industry does real science. “We publish, innovate, and push boundaries,” Tina Albershardt emphasized, breaking myths about biotech vs. academia. ?? Networking is key. “Build a ‘steering committee’ of mentors and advocates,” panelists urged. Reflecting on what they wished they had known earlier, Kaitlyn worried that leaving R&D would limit her career, but it ultimately opened new doors. Namita stressed the importance of confidence: "As women, we tend to undervalue ourselves, but academia makes you a strong researcher. There are many entry points into the industry." Seattle’s biotech scene is expanding, with increasing opportunities in biotech manufacturing. Embrace change, stay flexible, and go after what you want! ?? #WomenInBio #LifeSciencesWashington #BiotechCareers #CareerTransitions #Networking
