?? Lettuce compost our lettuce ?? #nationalcompostweek On today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convos, we are asking Jimbo’s shoppers how long they think a head of lettuce could take to break down in a landfill. It could take up to 25 years for a head of lettuce to break down in a landfill. It’s scary to think that there are heads of lettuce in the landfill older than some of our @jimbosnaturally shoppers ?? Not only does sending our lovely lettuce leftovers to landfill cause us to miss out on their post life nutrients, but what would be a simple decomposition process via compost, instead could take 300x or more time to break down while maintaining their emission of methane UNTIL fully broken down. Alternatively, a head of lettuce that is composted either in backyard, commercially or municipally will break down much quicker (think weeks or months). ? So the best thing we can do to help mitigate them green house gasses and to utilize those good good nutrients is keep our food waste out of the landfills. Find new ways to gift it to our tummies or return it to our soil so that we may grow more ?? ?? *Disclaimer* Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states. Less Bites, More Budget ?? Savour The Savings On today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convos, we are asking Jimbo’s shoppers what they think the average American spends on food that goes uneaten in a year. While not quite as much as they guessed, savvy @jimbosnaturally shoppers still knew we consumers waste a good deal on food. In 2022, the average American spent $759 on food that went uneaten. The average household of four people wastes up to $2,760 a year! Best ways to prevent this: ? Plan ahead: make a list or order online so you don’t buy more than you need. ? Serve Smart: Portion control to reduce plate waste. ? Love your leftovers: pack em up and eat them within 3-4 days or freeze em. ? Compost, don’t trash: Set up a home compost bin or drop your food waste in your curbside organics bin or at a local compost center. ?? *Disclaimer* Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states. "Best By?" "Use By?" "Sell by?" But Why? On today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convos, we’re talking with Jimbo’s shoppers about what they think the difference between “best by”, “use by”, and “sell by” is. The USDA estimates that 30 percent of the food supply is lost or wasted at the retail and consumer levels. One source of food waste arises from consumers or retailers throwing away wholesome food because of confusion about the meaning of dates displayed on the label. In an effort to reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that the dates applied to food are for quality and not for safety. Food products are safe to consume past the date on the label, and regardless of the date, consumers should evaluate the quality of the food product prior to its consumption. ?? A “Best if Used By or Before” date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. A “Sell-By” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. A ”Use-By” date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula. Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality and when to enjoy them by. These foods can still be enjoyed after the date, but the flavor, smell or texture may be affected. Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety, and are not required by Federal law. It is not unlawful to sell food past the “Sell By” date. Thank you for giving our gameshow @wastewiseshow some media love on Earth Day, Fox 5 San Diego ?? great fun getting the chance to quiz the lovely Raoul Martinez & Shally Zomorodi . You two were such a hoot! Much respect for how early you guys film every day ?? Soooo appreciate Tiffany at FOX for creating the segment & Nadi Marketing for connecting us and making this all possible ?? ?? 1. On what date was the very first Earth Day observed? April 22nd, 1970 - Senator Gaylord Nelson recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize campus teach-ins and an estimated 20 million people nationwide attended the inaugural events at tens of thousands of sites across the United States. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of that year the United States Environmental Protection Agency was born, AKA EPA. 2. Cleopatra recognized the value of earthworms and worm composting (vermicompost) long before modern researchers. What punishment did she enact if one was caught removing or exporting earthworms? Death - That lady was cooollld. The Egyptian Queen is reported to have made worms sacred in 50 BC because of their composting ability, and made the removal of Earthworms from Egypt a crime punishable by death. 3. How long could a single head of lettuce take to break down in a landfill? Up to 25 years - Unfortchy, landfills don’t have the oxygen circulation for the microbes that break down organic matter, like food waste, to do their jobs. This causes it to take much longer to break down and maintains its emission of methane until fully broken down. However, in backyard composting or a composting facility, a head of lettuce usually takes a matter of weeks or months, depending on the conditions. So making sure our food waste stays out of landfills is one of the best and simplest ways we as consumers can help mitigate climate change. #doyourpart #getsmart #watchwastewise #sosandiego

#StopFoodWasteDay Today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convo’s it’s @stop_food_waste_day and we are asking Jimbo’s shoppers what the best, most sustainable way to prevent or deal with food waste is? ?? The most sustainable way to deal with food waste is called “Source Reduction”. The earliest way we can prevent food waste is by reducing the overall volume of food produced in general. If we buy less food or order less food, we create less food, annnd that means we’ll throw less out. This is about simply reducing waste by not creating it in the first place. & Allllsooooooo, ? Don’t buy or order food you won’t eat. ? Finish all your food. ? Eat your leftovers ? If possible, Limit what you purchase to your immediate use. ? Listen to you body, if you are full save for later! ? Only take what you can eat. ? Feed leftovers to animals or compost them. ? Do more with less ? Donate leftover or unwanted food. ? Don’t over indulge! *Disclaimer* ?? Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states. On today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convos, we are having chats before checkout with some of Jimbo’s Carmel Valley shoppers. Let’s find out what the difference is between “Biodegradable & Compostable”. - Most every item is biodegradable as it will eventually break down over time. However, not everything is compostable. Items that are referred to as compostable will break down within a controlled time and setting like a backyard compost or compost facility (think items like food scraps, yard waste, & uncoated cardboards). Realistically most everything is biodegradable, given enough time. However, it is a current, common consumer convention to label a material “biodegradable,” and require that at least 90 percent of the original material has the ability to be degraded into water, minerals, and carbon dioxide within a relatively short period, typically no more than six months. This makes these terms even trickier as we are now putting parameters on a concept that generally has no time limit. Plastics are biodegradable, but can take hundreds to thousands of years to breakdown. However glass, some metals & minerals, and even some chemicals may never biodegrade or show signs of degradation, even after thousands of years. ?? *Disclaimer* Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states.
