What a time the Detroit Month of Design was! ???? Check out the highlights from Waste to Wonder 2024, a culmination of our summer-long initiative that brought together artists, restaurants and non-profits, sustainability experts, and community partners to explore innovative ways to transform food waste into art, design, and impactful solutions! From insightful panel discussions to beautiful art to live cooking demos and hands-on activities, we celebrated creativity and sustainability. ??? Meet Jennifer Mones ???? Jennifer shows us the power of creativity and sustainability combined. Her work is a fresh take on what art can be—bold, beautiful, and earth-friendly. Jennifer Mones (b. 1993, Pacoima, CA) is a surrealist oil painter living in Detroit, MI since 2017. Jen earned her BFA in illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 2014. She’s worked in various creative fields, such as hand modeling, UX design, and fine art. She has exhibited work in Los Angeles and throughout the Midwest. The vibrant colors and tropical flora in her work stem from her roots in Colombia and the Dominican Republic, where her parents are from. She combines that with instruments of surrealism and the macabre, to reflect on how absurd and bittersweet the human experience can be. Her love of storytelling is shown through symbolism and motifs from classic lore. Deer skulls often appear in her work, they represent cycles of change throughout life since deer shed and regrow their antlers. To achieve harmonious color transitions, she uses a Venetian painting technique called “sfumato,” which involves thin layers of translucent paint working together. Known for shaking up the vegan scene in Detroit, Chef Montrell is all about turning plant-based cuisine into an art form, and now he’s taking it up a notch by providing food waste from his kitchen for our artists to use at “Waste to Wonder.” ?? ? From the iconic Liquor Basket Gratiot —Detroit’s liquor store-meets-art gallery—we’re bringing a fresh take on sustainability where food scraps become the canvas. Meet Halima S., a Somali-Canadian PhD candidate and multidisciplinary artist making waves in the Detroit art scene ??? Combining her Civil Engineering research on air pollution with her passion for eco-horror and climate storytelling, Halima transforms everyday objects into captivating art that challenges our perception of waste and beauty. Her work invites us to rethink our relationship with the environment. Catch her magic and get inspired! Halima Salah, a Somali-Canadian PhD candidate in Civil Engineering at Wayne State University, earned her BSc in Civil Engineering with a minor in Environmental and Water Engineering from the American University of Sharjah (AUS) in 2017. She obtained her MS in Civil Engineering from Wayne State University in 2021. Her PhD research focuses on Air Pollution, Air Quality and its impacts on human health. Halima is also a multidisciplinary artist whose academic and creative interests intersect. This has lead her to explore eco-horror and climate-related storytelling, with a special emphasis on critical theory. Halima is interested in understanding the human and non-human relationships with the environment. Halima's work aims to inspire deeper consideration of our impact on the natural world. She self-published a short comic anthology of vampire and ghost stories titled "PORTRAIT" (2022) on Tapas, and is currently working on an experimental eco-horror film script.
