The perceived (not actual) dependency on third-party information is rooted in banks lacking the infrastructure to process and verify self-reported information on an application. The irony of our banking system is that it prides itself on trust and relationships, yet it relies on a disconnected balance of consumers self-reporting their own information in an application — without any verification or traceability, and third-party tattletale transcripts on consumers. This isn’t a design for fostering accountability; it’s a system that exploits consumer ignorance and places the paperwork burden on the bank. Banks spend $30B a year processing, verifying, and cross-referencing data from applications, despite the fact that when we think 'underwriting' we think of an oversimplified credit score that barely captures the nuances of risk per product (you need application data for that). If the bureau information was truly conclusive, the unit economics of underwriting an application would not look like this: - Banks complaining about paying $1 to the bureaus for a single score, - Banks (reluctantly but necessarily) spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars in processing costs on self-reported information per application. That alone shows where the real weight in decision-making lies. If we really want a system where consumers can provide their own information and see what’s being reported about them, it has to be built on traceability and verification from the start. Instead of wrestling with mismatched third-party reports, why not establish trust upfront? - Income Verification: Let consumers log directly into their payroll. - Vendor Payment History: Allow them to connect their bank accounts. - Tax History: Have them connect to their IRS. It’s not about eliminating third-party bureaus — it’s about giving consumers the tools to see, correct, and contextualize what’s reported about them in an instantly verified way.
