Did you ever think you would see?vacuum?technology deployed in rail maintenance?!??? ? At PRM, we are invested in ingenuity. We love using cutting edge technology but we also like to use proven technology in new ways.??? ? Railways stretch thousands of kms and intersect hundreds of roads. At every point where rail and road meet, a (usually concrete) level crossing must be installed to enable safe passage. Wear and tear over time means the level crossings must also be removed and replaced.??? ? Traditional construction and removal of railway level crossings places people in the danger zone of operating machinery, requiring heavy equipment fitted with swing lifting devices to lift heavy concrete panels using manually attached chains.? ? PRM’s in house innovators considered how level crossings could be installed and removed more safely. To start, we procured a bespoke?vacuum?unit from Vacuworx. We then designed, engineered and fabricated the hardware required to attach the unit to a hi rail excavator…ultimately creating an incredibly strong?vacuum?attachment that can lift concrete panels up to 12 tonnes!? ? The attachment is operated wirelessly, meaning we can now lift the heavy concrete panels for installation or removal in level crossings…all without entering the danger zone of operating equipment! There is no need to manually attach chains and no risk of people being exposed to impact.? ? Our?vacuum?lifting system can be configured to suit project requirements, with each suction pad having the lifting capacity of 1.5 tonne. As far as we know, this is the first time this technology has been used in the rail industry. ? We’re proud of our ingenious team, continually transforming rail operations for heavy haul operators - this time by looking at an existing technology in a new way.
