UR2PhD provides structured training and learning opportunities to increase undergraduate research opportunities.

关于我们

The Computing Research Association’s UR2PhD program aims to increase the quality and scale of undergraduate research opportunities in order to increase the representation of women and gender-marginalized students pursuing doctoral studies in computing. UR2PhD offers new and existing researchers opportunities to develop their skills, while reducing the workload of faculty mentors. UR2PhD is proud to deliver two courses, including: an undergraduate research methods course that helps first-time researchers build practical and critical skills and a graduate student mentor training course that helps students provide culturally responsive mentorship. UR2PhD also hosts a series of workshops to increase students’ understanding of the graduate school application process, learn more about research pathways, and engage with active researchers.

One of UR2PhD’s goals is to encourage students to continue with research beyond the undergraduate research methods course. UR2PhD supported Katherine Gash (University of North Texas) and her team with travel funding to present their research at the 2024 VL/HCC conference. Reflecting on her experience, Gash says “It was an amazing experience! Seeing the work done by fellow researchers was eye-opening. Our presentation was both nerve-wracking and thrilling. It was extremely satisfying as a whole to have our work validated in such a way.” UR2PhD hopes to continue to provide students with opportunities to travel to showcase their findings. To apply for funding, past participants can complete this form: https://lnkd.in/g2MCqiyk Haven’t participated in the UR2PhD undergraduate research methods course? Applications for the spring 2025 session are now open! Apply today: https://lnkd.in/gcS-VYCx First-time researchers working in groups of 2-4 are invited to apply. On Monday, our team hosted an Ask Me Anything session as part of the Computing Research Engagement & Awareness series. Students from across the continent were invited to ask questions about how folks got involved in research, what research was like in practice, and why research can be a rewarding and worthwhile experience. The UR2PhD team was joined by undergraduates who are actively involved in their research communities and would especially like to thank Kianna Bolante, who’s research spans social computing, accessibility, and computer science education, Thien Thanh Truong, who’s research centers on computer science education and user experience, and Sonia Fereidooni, who’s research interests lie at the intersection of spatiotemporal machine learning, reinforcement learning, and biomedicine. The last fall workshop of the series will be held on Monday, November 18 at 6pm ET and will focus on “Networking with Researchers.” We encourage any undergraduate who is interested in learning how to effectively network and make connections to sign up to attend the session: https://lnkd.in/gJQ-9WeW If you’d like to review past workshops in the series, we highly encourage folks to check out our YouTube playlist: https://lnkd.in/gtF3MbwP
