"If the UK wants to grow its resilience and create the right conditions to protect national security, it must move budget and policy towards safeguarding planetary solvency." To coincide with the Chancellor's Spring Statement, Prof Tim Lenton and Sandy Trust have published an op-ed in the Financial Times Sustainable Views on the importance of managing human activity to minimise the risk of societal disruption from climate and nature-driven impacts. ?? Great to join Defra and guests from across the UK yesterday, to discuss the role of science and collaboration in ensuring sustainable fisheries! ?? This event, hosted by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and supported by Green Futures Solutions, focused on the innovative projects and collaborations between scientists, policymakers and fishers, which are currently underway to address evidence gaps within the UK’s Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs). Over the afternoon, we heard from science leads at Defra and Cefas, including Gideon Henderson and David Carlin, about the value of transparency, innovation and collaboration across UK FMPs, before panel sessions spotlighted the ways that researchers - from marine biologists to social scientists - are engaging with industry, NGOs and recreational fishers to improve the evidence base for UK fisheries. For Green Futures Solutions, it's been a pleasure to work with Defra on this event - communicating the science and collaboration that supports sustainable fisheries in the UK. A big thank you to Defra's Katie St. John Glew, Jennifer Scott, and Maura Smyth (Cefas) for their insight and collaboration over the past few months, and to the individual project leads and science leads at Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs who made this event a success. And last (but not least!), well done to Pamela Buchan, Amy Shaw and Ben Dickenson Bampton on the University of Exeter team for all their hard work ?? ??
