New Publication, "Sex-specific Concordance of Striatal Transcriptional Signatures of Opioid Addiction in Human and Rodent Brains" @SOBP @BiologicalPsyc1 Global Open Science Productive collaboration with Marianne Seney, Abraham Palmer, Joseph Seggio, Julie Blendy, and Olivier George - many others! Contributions from Julie Michaud, Mackenzie Gamble, Benjamin Williams, Madeline Kuppe Fish, BaDoi Phan, Darrell Eacret, and other key players! #Opioid #addiction, known as opioid use disorder (#OUD), causes lasting changes in the brain's nucleus accumbens (NAc), and these changes differ between men and women. In women with OUD, the brain alterations look like those in female rodents forced to take opioids, persisting whether they’re still using or have quit, while in men, the changes match those in rodents that chose to take opioids, but only right after stopping (acute withdrawal). Both humans and animals show similar shifts in how genes are regulated, revealing that opioid addiction disrupts key brain processes and highlighting the need for #sex-specific treatment approaches. We wanted to figure out how opioid drugs like morphine affect different parts of the brain over time and why males and females might respond differently, so they studied mice using a special technique to see the whole brain in detail. We gave morphine to male and female mice and used a marker called c-Fos to spot active brain areas, checking them at 1 hour and 4 hours after the dose with a high-tech microscope. We discovered that morphine impacts more brain areas at 4 hours than at 1 hour, with males showing bigger changes in reward-related areas (linked to dopamine) and females showing more changes in thinking and decision-making areas (the cortex). This study helps explain how opioids work differently in the brain depending on time and sex, which could improve how we treat pain or addiction in the future. Research is critical for finding cures for everything from #Cancer to #MentalHealthIssues. Recently, Ryan Logan, PhD, a professor of #Psychiatry and a #Neurobiologist UMass Chan Medical School, found a connection between poor sleep and relapses in #OpioidUseDisorder. His research identified molecular changes in the brain associated with psychiatric disorders including opioid use. These changes lead to a disruption in circadian rhythms and ultimately to poor sleep, which increases the chances of a patient returning to substance use. This finding will lead to medicinal treatments that can improve sleep in this population thereby reducing recidivism in Opioid Use Disorder as well as help others suffering from various #MentalHealthIssues. #ResearchMatters #ResearchSavesLives https://lnkd.in/eQZwHjWg
