"UMass Amherst’s is the sole academic tennis-turf-research program in the U.S., in part because, while most town parks have asphalt courts, there are only a few hundred grass courts in the country. Not only are they expensive to maintain, with daily mowing and rolling, but they are far more challenging to play on." The entire facility is in the capable hands of James Poro, who works hard to keep it in top notch condition for students, researchers and tennis enthusiasts alike! Under the leadership of Dwayne Breger, University of Massachusetts Amherst's Clean Energy Extension is helping farmers with a new crop - solar energy. Agrivoltaics (or Dual-Use Solar & Agriculture) allows crops and solar panels to share space. The system gives farmers a new revenue stream while contributing to progress on Massachusetts' carbon emission reduction goals. https://lnkd.in/eAT-vHs6 https://lnkd.in/e8Wnwigx Stephen Herbert, Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst, River Strong

You say tomato, I say, "yes, please." University of Massachusetts Amherst Extension's Vegetable Team Leader, Susan Scheufele went deep on tomatoes recently in the Boston Globe. Whether the main character in an icy gazpacho, or the juicy counterpoint to the smoky bacon in a BLT, fresh, local tomatoes are the stars of our favorite summer meals. https://lnkd.in/em9jZeVY If you'd like to grow your own, check out UMass Extension's helpful fact sheets: https://lnkd.in/epqK_zFp

89th Annual Bay State Livestock Classic is a Wrap! We're still talking about all the fun we had at The Hadley Farm last weekend. University of Massachusetts Amherst students in the department of Veterinary and Animals Sciences spent the spring semester fitting and training animals they chose to show. The students presented their chosen horses, poultry, cattle, sheep, and goats before a crowd of discerning judges and spectators. The event culminated in College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst Dean Michael Fox presenting Arielle Benedict with the Premier Showperson award. Also during the Classic, UMass Police Department paid tribute to two long-serving police horses: Miranda and Miller, as they retired after a collective 31 years of distinguished service to the campus community. Thanks to everyone who made the event a success, including UMass Transportation Services, and of course #1 UMass Dining! See you again next year.
