ULI Boston partnered with the City of Salem, Massachusetts to deliver an innovative version of the Urban Land Institute's flagship UrbanPlan public sector workshop to City staff. UrbanPlan is an experiential learning simulation that allows participants to play the role of a development team member and explore the tradeoffs associated with every decision as they respond to a fictional RFP to rebuild a blighted urban neighborhood devastated by a fire. A huge thank you to our member volunteers who made this possible, both by innovating the program to fit into a staff meeting-length module and by delivering it: ULI Boston UrbanPlan Chair David MacManus of Eastern Bank who devoted many hours, ULI Boston District Council Chair Sandi Silk of Jefferson Apartment Group, Russ DeMartino of Skanska, James Gray of Stantec, Lisa Cronin Plume of CoStar Group, and ULI Boston Housing Roundtable Co-Chair Scott Pollack of SRPlanning. The workshop was delivered through our Mobility Oriented Development initiative, a project of the ULI Boston Policy Committee led by Chair Donald Briggs. An equally big thank you to Mayor Dominick Pangallo and Chief of Staff Lisa Peterson for their invitation to do this, and to staff including Tom Daniel, Tom Devine, Maria Josefson and dozens more for their willingness to thoughtfully engage.
