How can a city revitalize its downtown, enhance vibrancy, and tackle challenges like unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings? These are the questions our Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) was tasked with addressing in the City of Vacaville this August. Now, read the final report, just published: https://lnkd.in/gRtkpM89 TAPs provide strategic advice on complex land use and real estate development issues for local clients, such as municipalities, public agencies, and non-profit developers. ULI SF convened a team of seven volunteer subject matter experts from diverse disciplines to work with Vacaville leaders to develop strategies for: - Transforming downtown into a destination for residents and visitors. - Implementing cost-effective approaches to upgrade URM buildings. - Expanding housing solutions while preserving the area’s character. - Enhancing streetscapes and creating dynamic community spaces. The report contains actionable recommendations for downtown marketing, historic preservation, placemaking, and more. Three teams. One fictional town. Endless creativity. Last week we hosted our inaugural UrbanPlan’s Got Talent competition, where the Young Leaders Group (YLG), NEXT, and the Executive Board battled it out to win over a mock City Council and the crowd. From 90s-inspired slide decks to bold bribes (birthday cake was involved!), this event was packed with innovative ideas, spirited competition, and plenty of laughs. Curious who claimed victory? Find out which team impressed the City Council and who claimed the coveted People’s Choice Award in our blog recap: https://lnkd.in/gkywQ5K6 We'd like to give a big shoutout to our emcee, Lee Edlund, for keeping the energy high, and to our honorable City Council: Karen Majors, Shwetha Subramanian, and Bryan Thornton. We'd also like to thank these team members for all their hard work: Team YLG: Kevin Choy, Chris DeHaan, Macey Mathews, Laurie Sartain, Micah Solit, and Grace Yu Team NEXT: Garrett Eng, Andrew Slaton, Anthony Valerio, Kristian Weeks, and Justin A. Zucker Team Executive Board: David Blackwell, Zorana Bosnic, Matt Concannon, Nell Selander, Eric Tao, and Roderick Roche Missed the fun? Don’t worry—we have plenty of opportunities to get involved with UrbanPlan! Our Spring Semester kicks off after the holidays, and we’re hosting an in-person volunteer training on February 11th.
