Sometimes you do your best learning when you get your hands dirty. Students who have come through the doors of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources have known that for more than a century. Hands-on learning—formally known as experiential learning—helped train the very people now managing the United States’ vital natural resources. And Warnell has been doing it since 1906, making us the first forestry school in the South. Warnell has changed names a couple of times over the past century, but that’s not all that is different now. When the “George Peabody School of Forestry” first opened at the University of Georgia—which is also the birthplace of public higher education in the United States—it focused on the country’s vast forest resources. But in the past decades, the Warnell School has changed its teaching philosophy, research and courses to focus on the world’s essential natural resources. We were first. But we’re also looking to the future. Students who graduate from Warnell understand the importance of managed ecosystems throughout Georgia and the world. Our programs continually evolve to reflect new discoveries about our natural world, a changing society, new technologies and a shifting workforce. Undergrads can major in fisheries and wildlife, forestry, natural resources recreation and tourism, or natural resource management and sustainability. They can earn a bachelor of science in forest resources, master of science, master of forest resources, master of natural resources, or a doctor of philosophy. Regardless of the degree they walk away with, Warnell graduates help us fulfill our mission every day they go to work: To help conserve and manage our natural resources.

?? Georgia Agriculture Alert!??The invasive spotted lanternfly?(SLF) has been detected in our state for the first time. While SLFs pose no direct health risk to humans, they threaten Georgia's agriculture industry—especially crops like grapevines, apples, and peaches. This time of year, you may see adult SLFs with distinctive gray-brown and red-spotted wings. Their feeding weakens plants, causing sap loss, wilting, and dieback, while also promoting black sooty mold. If you see a SLF, take immediate action and: 1. Take a clear picture of the pest. 2. Kill it. 3. Report your sighting at: https://lnkd.in/g5hU7jRS More info: https://lnkd.in/g4tyanJq SLF infographic: https://lnkd.in/gqEmNwYJ #warnell #outreach #invasive #spottedlanternfly Georgia Forestry Commission UGA Cooperative Extension Bugwood Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health

In 2023-2024, Georgia has seen unprecedented southern pine beetle (SPB) outbreaks, with over 1,600 spots identified. SPB can devastate pine forests, and healthy pine trees are attacked when SPB populations are at epidemic levels. To address this growing threat, Warnell and the Georgia Forestry Commission have teamed up to offer statewide presentations on managing SPB risk. We’ll continue these efforts in 2025 and have just released a new outreach publication with best practices to help prevent SPB damage. Learn more about southern pine beetles and effective forestry management strategies to combat outbreaks at: https://warnell.cc/SPB_Pub #warnell #pinebeetle #forestry #publication #outreach
