A little over a year ago, I reached a turning point in my engineering career. While my work provided financial freedom and satisfied my passion for solving technical challenges, I felt persistent misalignment with my values and calling. Although I was making a positive impact, many of my skills and passions felt sidelined. I was only tapping into a small part of what I could offer, limited by the boundaries of my role and company’s needs.
A mentor once told me, “Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.” I reached that threshold and knew it was time for something different. After a reflective search, I transitioned to a career where my values are embraced and serve as an asset. I now use my technical background to create transformative change that uplifts the community I grew up in.
This journey hasn’t been without its growing pains, but I’m grateful I made the leap. This alignment has provided me with a much-needed sense of self. This clarity has inspired me to accomplish lifelong milestones like completing an Olympic triathlon, buying a house, and being the “cool aunt.”
To anyone contemplating a change, know that fulfillment is possible without sacrificing stability. Change is not easy and everyone's path is unique; however, if you feel something is missing in your work, opportunities for change are out there.
To my technical and mission-driven friends, I encourage you to explore opportunities with local Manufacturing Extension Partnership and technical non-profits. If you’re in Ohio, reach out to me; I would love to connect you to this purpose-driven space. Your skills and passions matter. When incorporated into your career path, you can make a significant impact. The journey to alignment may be challenging, but it can be one of the most rewarding paths you can take.
