Water supply systems provide the world with the required amounts of water for the smooth functioning of modern societies. To keep on delivering them, water companies have to upgrade their planning regarding the operation and maintenance of water pipeline networks. Old pipes and unattended leakages can lead to ample quantities of wasted water globally (up to 30%), immense revenue losses (around €16 million) and adverse environmental effects (drinking water issues, wastewater production).
The TUBERS project aspires to become a definitive leakage solution for the European water supply sector. By jointly developing a snake-like resident robot, a modular soft robotic platform, a Decision Support System and the needed base stations, the aim is to address the critical demand for improved maintenance of the water distribution pipeline system through 24/7 inspection and targeted in-situ repairs. Therefore, when the project’s ecosystem of robotic platforms and tools is market-ready, it will be able to save 158GWh of energy and 79,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in a 5-year period. The TUBERS project is part of the digital transformation movement that strives for ground-breaking scientific research, tech-based economic growth, sustainability and societal improvement in Europe.

Deepening Water Scarcity in Breadbasket Nations ???? According to a recent paper published in Nature Communications, the trends of water scarcity occurring across China, India, and the USA are alarming. From 1980 to 2015, blue water demand rose significantly, mainly driven by irrigation for key crops like maise and rice. Unsustainable demand during peak months has surged by 101% in China, 82% in India, and 49% in the US. The findings indicate that there are large areas under prolonged water stress, calling for #sustainable water management practices to find optimal compromises between human and environmental needs. #waterscarcity #watermanagement #agriculture #waterconservation #climatechange
