The Partnership Fund, the investment arm of the Partnership for New York City, operates three public-sector labs: the Transit Tech Lab (TTL), established in 2018 in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and expanded in 2019 to include NJ Transit, the NYC Department of Transportation, and the Port Authority of NY and NJ; the Environmental Tech Lab (ETL), established in 2023 in partnership with New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); and the Buildings Tech Lab (BTL), launched in 2024 in partnership with the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). The Innovation Labs are an essential element of the Fund’s “Technology in the Public Interest” strategy, which aims to invest in companies and programs that advance the application of new technologies to address urban challenges, including helping government agencies deliver services more effectively.

?? Runwise, a New York based company using wireless controls to help buildings operate their heating and water systems more efficiently, is further expanding its partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to cut carbon emissions and save money. Results to date: ? Transit Tech Lab Pilot: Runwise installed 170 sensors across 7 MTA buildings, resulting in an average 40% reduction in fuel usage and $140,000 in fuel savings when compared to the prior year’s weather-adjusted heating levels. ? Post Pilot: In October 2023, the MTA scaled Runwise’s technology to 4 additional buildings. By reducing excess fuel consumption in these 11 MTA buildings, Runwise: ?? Is projected to save the MTA $400k annually in fuel costs. ?? Eliminated 1,185 metric tons of CO2 emissions —the equivalent to taking 282 cars off the road ? Now, Runwise will further expand its wireless control system to ~38 additional buildings and anticipates delivering $1.4M in annual savings for the MTA. Thank you to NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) and the 20 #BuildingsTechLab semi-finalists who spent the past few days diving deep into how data integration and process management tools can help streamline construction permitting, compliance, inspection, and enforcement initiatives. The energy in the room was infectious - DOB decision makers asked thorough questions about how new tech could improve daily operations, and the 20 semi-finalists emphatically responded. ?? Stay tuned to find out who DOB selects to move forward with a proof of concept ?? ????

Partnership President & CEO Kathy Wylde was proud to present the inaugural Granville T. Woods Award to NaviLens CEO Javier Pita at the Gala for Friends of the New York Transit Museum. ?? An alum of the 2020 Transit Tech Lab, Navilens has since expanded their partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to transform the transit experience for riders who are visually impaired and have limited English proficiency, setting a powerful example of how innovation can drive accessibility. #Accessibility #NYC #TechInThePublicInterest
I was delighted to present the first ever Granville T. Woods Award for Innovation at the Gala for Friends of the New York Transit Museum last Thursday, to Javier Pita, CEO of NaviLens, who attended along with his wife, NaviLens COO NURIA FRUCTUOSO RUIZ. Their work is making a real difference for transit users who are blind or have low vision, and it speaks directly to the Museum’s (and the MTA’s) commitment to accessibility. It was a privilege to have Kathryn S. Wylde from the Partnership for New York City there to present the award as the Transit Tech Lab brought NaviLens to New York.?? ?? The Granville T. Woods Award for Innovation honors the Brooklyn-based 19th century Black inventor whose work laid the foundation for the third rail technology used today by railroads worldwide. Not enough people know his story, and it’s one of our favorites to tell at the Transit Museum. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eHmbhZyU

"New technologies are helping local governments better understand bridge conditions, determine locations for street-side electric vehicle charging and even use robots for small maintenance jobs... The development of proof-of-concept applications could be imagined as more of the beginning of new partnerships among tech firms and the various transit operators in the New York City metro."
