Publishing developmental biology through the decades ? 2025 is the 100th anniversary of The Company of Biologists. To mark this major milestone, Development's Senior Editor Alex Eve looked at how publishing trends have evolved through the decades, all from the perspective of the table of contents: https://lnkd.in/dCNt8S5U Development's in-house team also picked papers of their choice in the first issues of Development or its previous incarnation, Journal of Embryology and Experimental Morphology (JEEM). In these vignettes, we learn more about the fascinating stories of the authors and their research. ??Culture most fowl?(by Katherine Brown) This piece turns the spotlight on an?article published in the first issue of JEEM, over 70 years ago, with a surprisingly modern theme ?– in vitro culture. And we find out more about the husband-and-wife team Etienne and Emilienne Wolff?behind this paper: https://lnkd.in/eH8PJAR2 ??Breaking newt?(by?Laura Hankins) In this post featuring Drosophila ballet, six-legged newt and a pinball machine modelled on Waddington’s landscape, we learn more about Ruth Clayton, a biologist who published in the first issue of JEEM: https://lnkd.in/eh5bvNu8 ??Audrey across the Atlantic?(by Joyce (Joy Sze) Yu) Here, we meet Audrey Muggleton-Harris, an embryologist who published in the first issue of Development. We explore her research into in vitro systems and early human development, and how she left a mark on both sides of the Atlantic: https://lnkd.in/eUDRx9qR ??Tik tock heat shock (by Alex Eve) In this piece, we meet Tom Elsdale, an author in Development's first issue, and learn about archery accidents, cloning frogs and one of life’s biggest philosophical questions – time: https://lnkd.in/erXDAv7a

How to build a community site for developmental biologists As our publisher The Company of Biologists celebrates its 100th birthday this year, the Node is celebrating turning 15!?To mark the occasion, we published two pieces, taking a walk down memory lane. 1??Here, the Node's Community Manager Joyce (Joy Sze) Yu takes the readers through the steps of how the Node was built: https://lnkd.in/e8rASUKJ 2??The past and present Community Managers of the Node got together to chat about what it's like working at the Node, and how the job has influenced their subsequent careers. Thank you to Eva Amsen, Catarina Vicente, Aidan Maartens and Helen Zenner Branco for building the Node community over the past 15 years! https://lnkd.in/eijrjdki Please continue to read and contribute to the Node – the Node wouldn’t have lasted for 15 years without your support! #biologists100 #CommunityBuilding #STEMcareers #DevelopmentalBiology

Development has just published their 40th interview in the ‘Transitions in development‘ series. This series of interviews features principal investigators (PIs) within the first five or so years of establishing their own research group. Through these conversations, Development aims to illustrate that there is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to securing an independent position and setting up a research programme. Discussing the challenges and difficulties new PIs have overcome and highlighting the best moments will hopefully offer encouragement to other ECRs and stimulate discussion around the career path of a developmental biologist. preLists are curated lists of preprints covering one of two different themes: either preprints on a specific topic, or preprints which have been presented at a scientific meeting. You do not need to be a registered preLighter to be able to curate a preList. Any researcher who would like to make a new preList – either focusing on their topic-of-interest or of research presented at a meeting – is able to do so by registering on preLights.
