In Virginia, coastal employment represents $131.9 billion in annual wages??. At the Mid-Atlantic Seascape, commercial fisheries harvest 751 million pounds of seafood worth $600 million. Fisheries are an important food source and a big part of people's livelihoods??. We want to celebrate #WorldFisheriesDay by acknowledging this and highlighting the important work that has been done to create a more sustainable relationship with our oceans. Ocean management along the Atlantic Coast is in a critical period of change and faces two challenges: ??Important fish species are reacting to climate change. ??Renewable energy development is rapidly expanding. TNC works with partners in government, industry, and other NGOs to advance policies and practices that balance the ocean’s many uses while restoring and sustaining the integrity of its natural systems—using the ocean wisely without crowding nature out. Happy World Fisheries Day!?? ?? Daniel White

Longleaf pine ecosystems are among the most diverse places in the world??. They provide an incredible habitat for plants and animals, and this happens in the forest’s understory. ??When we burn this ecosystem, it clears the forest floor, allowing sunlight to come in and helping native plants to grow. At this point, we can identify what species are there and which ones are missing. This is when understory restoration comes in, and with the help of our volunteers, we collect seeds, plant them, and help bring back this beautiful forest. Leave an everlasting positive impact. Join us for a #VolunteerDay planting native understory seedlings. ??Plant native understory seedlings: Little bluestem grass & round-headed bush clover When: Tues, November 26 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Where: Piney Grove Preserve in Wakefield, VA Sign up: Email Brynna Strand, [email protected]

Talk about a hard life! ?? Mussels are smart creatures that rely on other species to survive their first life stages, just as the whole river system relies on them for clean water and food. Nature flows in a beautiful synchronicity, which, when interrupted, can have big consequences. Our efforts to restore mussel populations aim to bring balance back to our local rivers. We are seeing this happen at Bennett Shoal, where we are no longer adding mussels from the hatchery; instead, we are tracking the mussels we put in place. The results show that there is a new generation born from the mussels we placed. They survived and are following their natural life cycle in the wild! ??We are excited to see these results and motivated to keep up this work. Our number one conservation strategy is land protection. The Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve (VVCR) is an excellent example of our work??. We protected 14 barrier and marsh islands from development. These islands help protect Eastern Shore communities from storm surges and sea level rise and provide critical wildlife habitat??. Willis Wharf, known as Clam Town USA, has benefited from this protection because it improves water quality, directly influencing clam habitat, which the community depends on. Each individual mussel is capable of filtering around 8 to 15 gallons of water per day??. This impressive filtration capability helps maintain water quality by removing particles, algae, and even some pollutants from their environment. This is ecologically significant to sustain the whole river system and for us, who rely on clean drinking water??. Did you know mussels are responsible for our rivers’ clear water? Comment your answer!
