On Saturday, November 16, TNC in Ohio gathered with partners from around the state to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grand River in Northeast Ohio being designated as a Wild & Scenic River! This prestigious designation, awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), recognizes the Grand River's outstanding natural beauty, ecological significance, and recreational value. Being designated Wild & Scenic river makes the Grand River part of the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program, which aims to protect and preserve the state's most pristine waterways. A river designated as Wild & Scenic is recognized for its free-flowing condition, water quality, and exceptional scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, or cultural values. The Grand River, with its lush forested corridors, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes, truly embodies these qualities. This designation helps ensure that the river remains protected from development and pollution, allowing future generations to enjoy its natural splendor. Join us in celebrating this milestone and the ongoing efforts to preserve the Grand River's wild and scenic beauty! ??: Rebecca Nieminen

This Fall, volunteers throughout Ohio collected thousands of native tree nuts and seeds around their homes and donated them to The Nature Conservancy to assist with reforestation efforts at stream and wetland restoration sites. Volunteers joined TNC staff at three different restoration sites throughout the state to put tree nuts in the ground and plant the next generation of forests. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time and tree nuts to this initiative! Photos by Clarissa Whiting/TNC

Bioblitz—maybe you’ve heard the term before, but do you know what a bioblitz is and how it can help contribute to our understanding of biodiversity? Think of it as a nature scavenger hunt, for science. During a bioblitz, community and professional scientists gather over several days to identify and list all living species within a particular area. But you don’t need to wait to participate in a formal event. In fact, you can participate from your own yard or community! Learn more and get started at https://nature.ly/3CvZB4i.

Have you heard the good news? During a project visit to Sandusky Bay this past summer, TNC staff were thrilled to spot American white pelicans soaring over the Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area. Once a rare sight this side of the Mississippi River, these majestic birds are returning to the shores of Lake Erie more frequently. And in 2023, the Ohio Division of Wildlife recorded pelicans nesting in Ohio for the first time. Read more feel-good stories of hope for biodiversity in Ohio at https://nature.ly/3O1djij.

Biodiversity—nature by another name—is essential for all life on earth (and that’s not an exaggeration)! It’s on each of us to protect it. Here are some ways to help: 1. Pledge – Join us in calling on elected leaders to prioritize conservation action for nature and climate. 2. Learn and share – Educate yourself on nature and climate issues—and share with family and friends. 3. Connect with nature – Spending more time in nature is not only known to improve our health and connection to place but can also lead to new opportunities for action in your own backyard.
