I'm deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in the southern Appalachians. The loss of lives and destruction of homes and entire communities is truly heartbreaking. As we come together to support flood victims, remember that every gesture of kindness and compassion can make a difference. For those looking to help, a list of organizations aiding in the recovery efforts can be found here: [Link to organizations aiding in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts](https://lnkd.in/euUX38Uf). And here are some essential reminders for those who want to assist: ??Volunteering: Sign up with a reputable organization and never go to a disaster area alone. ?? Donations: Financial support is crucial as it allows for the purchase of supplies and services needed most urgently. ?? Supplies: Contact organizations beforehand to determine what, how much, and when supplies are needed. Severe natural disasters are having an increasingly profound impact across Appalachians communities. Together, we can support these communities as they rebuild and improve resilience by restoring the natural systems that help mitigate the most serious impacts of a changing climate.

It's #ClimateWeekNYC! We kicked it off on Governors Island yesterday where The New York Climate Exchange has been presenting a robust schedule of programming. Our executive director, Bill Ulfelder joined many others (like trustee, Robin Leichenko) for a panel discussion yesterday focused on #ClimateChange in Cities, organized by former trustees Susannah Smetana Kagan and Bill Solecki. Our big takeaway? Reports like the UN’s Special Report on Climate Change are important to saving lives—but even as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) continues to develop assessments (including a forthcoming report focused on cities) to inform the work of policymakers and practitioners, it's essential to remember that we are now at the stage of implementation. Adapting to climate change is a massive undertaking that should not be underestimated and, as panelist, Michael Menser of Brooklyn College said, "unless we center the issue of inequality from the very start, things will get a lot uglier very quickly." And yet, we left inspired. The Nature Conservancy believes a livable, healthy future for all is possible with immediate, inclusive climate solutions like clean energy and habitat restoration. Listening to the discussion of the importance of science-based assessments was invigorating and we are excited to keep the conversations going this week to advance the solutions that are crucial to our mission—to protect the land and waters on which all life depends.

Did you hear? Trees are the biggest health hack for city dwellers. Greening cities with trees not only helps to cool and clean the air but also has a significant impact on the health of the people who live there. The Green Heart Project in Louisville, KY has provided the strongest evidence to date of the positive relationship between trees and human health. This groundbreaking study has shown that by strategically planting the right trees in the right places, cities can foster happier, healthier communities.?? . In New York, we couldn’t agree more. We’re committed to ensuring the future of New York City's urban forest for all in a just and equitable way. Achieving our goals requires good science, an inspired vision, a powerful and effective voice, a diverse community and opportunities to connect New Yorkers to their trees. And that’s exactly what we’re doing through our Forest For All NYC coalition. Learn more at https://forestforall.nyc/

Director of Innovation at Jamestown | MBA | Angel Investor focused on Built Environment and Health

Not the only way to frame it, but a very powerful way to get many more people behind climate + environmental policies: Health. From former Sen Bill Frist, M.D.: "So let’s view climate change and the environment through the lens of individual and public health.... And this is exactly why I, a former heart and lung surgeon, am serving as the chair of the global board of?The Nature Conservancy, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to protecting nature and tackling climate change with solutions that are good for our planet and good for people. It’s not just conservation for conservation's sake; it’s for people, to make their lives better. I spent 20 years studying health science and personally delivering health services, so I understand peoples’ health. I see how nature and climate are inextricably linked to personal health." https://lnkd.in/eguJ3k_A Bill Ulfelder (thanks for sending), Jessica Ottney Mahar Calley Means Casey Means, MD

Talk about an adrenaline rush of a lifetime! Check out Juliet Lamb, marine scientist at The Nature Conservancy in New York in action. Juliet is releasing a cory shearwater after attaching a solar-powered satellite tag to it. For species like shearwaters, we know where they nest and their migration routes but we don’t know much about what they’re doing while they’re here. Helping to unlock the mysteries of these magnificent birds is an honor. We are studying seabirds in the hopes of gleaning more information about how offshore wind development and other ocean activities might impact them.
