Join us for a Day-after-Thanksgiving hike! We'll be hiking TNC's Grace Teninga Discovery Trail at Kankakee Sands. It’s predicted to be COLD that day, so be sure to bundle up—that way we can have a fun and cozy warm hike on the prairie. If family and friends are in town, bring them along! Dogs on leashes welcome, too! More on this hike and RSVP info at https://nature.ly/4g9xruj

Did you know wild turkeys in North America have bounced back from just 30,000 in the early 1900s to over 7 million today? Their adaptability means you can find them in some surprising places—like urban parks and even golf courses! Keep your eyes peeled and let us know where you've seen them. ?? https://lnkd.in/ep8YGnks

Earlier this week, TNC and US Fish & Wildlife Service staff met at the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Indiana. In 2023, TNC purchased 1700 acres adjacent to the Refuge, and we plan to transfer it to the USFWS next year. This meeting is part of the transfer process, so we are one step closer to making it happen. Staff are standing next to one of the oxbow lakes on the property—a boon for species diversity! And on the far northeastern part of the state, the second crew of trail builders from American Conservation Experience are making great progress at Douglas Woods south. They are immersed in the detailed and intense effort of clearing the natural surface tread for the new trail. Amazing work! Douglas Woods is becoming much more visitor-friendly. TNC staff and conservation partners toured preserves in far northwestern Indiana yesterday. One of the stops was Ivanhoe Dune and Swale in Gary. Ivanhoe is known for its beautiful lady's slipper orchid display in spring—it's a way different (albeit still magical) preserve after a snowfall! Yesterday, TNC's Nate Y., Carly, Maddy, Kirsten, Nate G. and Bob celebrated 25 years of GIS (Geographic Information System) Day at the Indiana Geographic Information Council, Inc.'s conference. TNC staff got to engage with other GIS users and learn how we can use geospatial technology to more effectively and efficiently conserve land and water in Indiana.
