TNC is working in Los Angeles to demonstrate what nature-based climate solutions can do for cities—and what cities can do for nature and climate change. Today we celebrate the recent groundbreaking of one of our flagship projects: the Bowtie Wetland Demonstration. This innovative project, part of the 100-Acre Vision at Taylor Yard, is being developed in collaboration with the property owner, California State Parks. This project transforms a contaminated former rail yard into an open space filled with native plants and walking paths. At the same time, it improves water quality, reduces urban heat, increases resilience to drought and flooding, improves public access to nature, and supports wildlife. Thank you to our many partners and the local communities of Glassell Park, Elysian Valley, Atwater Village, and Cypress Park for your contributions to making this project a reality! HELP FOR KELP ?? Everyone knows about terrestrial forests, but did you know that there are floating forests hiding beneath ocean waves? ?? Since the 1970s, the ethereal and species-rich kelp forests of Tasmania and Southern Australia have been in serious decline due to climate change and habitat degradation—only about 5% of historical canopy coverage remains in Tasmania. ?? But a new collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, Google, and other partners is using AI-generated maps to reveal the current state of the giant kelp canopy, indicate where to collect samples for a biobank that will preserve the species’ genetic diversity, and direct restoration efforts. ?? Meanwhile, biologists are growing giant kelp in labs, and last year seeded the fastgrowing species at 16 study sites in preparation to ramp up outplanting efforts. Help for kelp is on the way! ?? Every year, plastic pollution entering our oceans weighs more than three times the planet’s entire blue whale population. And beyond that, plastic pollution is so widespread that tiny microplastics you can’t see are contaminating our food, drinking water and even our bodies. Plastic pollution is a threat to the health of nature and the health of our communities, especially the most vulnerable populations. World leaders need to act. The United Nation's Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5) is working to adopt the first-ever international, legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. And we’re urging leaders from more than 175 countries to make this a strong and binding treaty when they meet later this year. ??? We need you to add your voice. Sign the pledge today and stand with The Nature Conservancy as we call on world leaders to come together and Stand Up to #PlasticPollution: https://nature.ly/3CzSqrX.

The Pacific Coast Ocean Restoration Initiative (#PCOR) is an ambitious, partnership-driven initiative that will leverage the incredible work done to date, and the contributions from a diverse suite of partners, to advance a new model for coordinated and effective marine restoration and endangered species recovery that can deliver transformative impact for rocky reef ecosystems and coastal communities in this region, and also serve as a model for similar efforts elsewhere around the country and world. As Bryan DeAngelis, TNC's lead scientist on the PCOR grant, says to Bay Nature magazine, it will “transform the way ocean restoration is done in California”. This initiative is only possible through a diverse partnership with NOAA Fisheries, California Ocean Protection Council, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Greater Farallones Association, The Bay Foundation, California Academy of Sciences, Aquarium of the Pacific, Sunflower Star Laboratory, Mendocino College, PAUA MARINE RESEARCH GROUP, LLC and UC Santa Barbara. ?? California voters approved a climate bond supporting safe drinking water, wildfire prevention, drought preparedness, and clean air. We are inspired and grateful to see voters back the largest climate and natural resources bond in state history. Californians are taking charge, choosing to invest in climate solutions now to protect us from fires and floods, build a more resilient future, and preserve the iconic California resources that make our state special. We would also like to thank the following for their vital contributions to the passage of Proposition 4: Senator Ben Allen, Chairman Greg Sarris, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Assemblymember Lori D Wilson, Senator Monique Limón, and the Yes on Prop 4 Campaign Committee. #Prop4 #YesOnProp4

Did you know that the floodplains of Northern California provide vital habitats for migratory birds, supporting 80% of the Pacific Flyway's total duck and goose populations? ???? Each winter, approximately 300,000 acres of flooded rice fields provide a staggering 200 million pounds of food for millions of waterfowl and shorebirds. By reactivating these essential habitats, we ensure our feathered friends have the resources they need during migration while showcasing the powerful connection between agriculture and conservation. ?? TNC is part of the #FloodplainForward Coalition, dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for our ecosystems by restoring floodplains that support diverse wildlife and agricultural productivity. Many thanks to our partners and coalition members including: California Trout, Northern California Water Association, and Ducks Unlimited. Land Protection & Stewardship Director @ The Nature Conservancy | Leading bold initiatives to protect CA's natural diversity and create conservation models of global relevance
One of the many reason's I continue to be inspired by and motivated by the work we do at The Nature Conservancy in California alongside dozens of key public and private partners is our incredible legacy and what it says about what we we can accomplish together going forward. In 1959, TNC's first California project—now the Angelo Coast Range Preserve—protected 3,100 acres of pristine old-growth forest in Mendocino County - now one of the University of California's iconic natural reserves. Since then, we've led or assisted with the permanent protection of over 1.1 million acres across the state. Most recently our work has culminated in the protection of the 25,000 acre Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve and 72,000-acre Frank and Joan Randall Preserve in Southern California. Many of these places are now cherished public lands. They are also part of foundation for California to reach it's ambitious goal of protecting 30% of its lands and waters by 2030. The pioneering spirit that began 65 years ago is stronger than ever as we work to accelerate the pace and scale of land and water protection at what is truly a pivotal moment in history. A moment that science and increasingly our own experience is showing us will detemine the fate of not just millions of species, but of our descendents. These preserved lands are more than just protected acres—they're living laboratories for scientific research and natural climate solutions where we demonstrate solutions to our most vexing environmental challenges. And, they are also lifelines for California's extraordinary biodiversity. They create crucial wildlife corridors, safeguard endangered species, and maintain vital ecosystem services that benefit millions of Californians. In an era of climate change and rapid development, I'm proud to be part of this team and the diverse partnerships that are ensuring that California's natural heritage endures. Six decades. Over a million acres. Countless species protected. One enduring mission: protecting the lands and waters on which all life depends. #Conservation #California #Sustainability #ClimateAction
