“While in treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, I was surrounded by a group of strong, empathetic, and extremely supportive women who were the bedrocks to my making it through. My mother gave up her career and moved from New York to Boston to be my caregiver. She was always a warrior and my strongest advocate throughout the journey.” “The PAs, RNs, and infusion nurses at Dana-Farber always provided strength, joy, and wisdom. They made even the toughest days seem OK. I vividly remember one instance where I got sick during one of my appointments with my PA. It was a challenging time for me during treatment, and I’ll never forget my PA standing behind me and putting her hand on my back. In that moment, it felt very much like we were in it together.” “I connected with many amazing women through the Young Adult Program support groups, and it was so meaningful to be around others my age who knew what I was going through. I also couldn’t have gotten through treatment without my girlfriends—they stayed with me whenever my mom returned to New York, they helped us move, and they provided endless support and friendship during this difficult time.” – Allie, team captain of the Acute Lymphomaniacs in the Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the contributions and achievements of the women in our community, and we spotlight their impact. To the women who made a special impact on Allie and all patients, thank you. We are proud to highlight women who are together against cancer. #IWD2025

“Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been in my backyard for as long as I can remember. Being in the healthcare industry, there is no word more synonymous in Boston for defying cancer than Dana-Farber. When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, we knew she had to go to Dana-Farber for a second opinion. Last year, my family once again returned to Dana-Farber when my mom was diagnosed with goblet cell adenocarcinoma. When I found out my three-year old cousin was also headed to the Jimmy Fund Clinic to treat his neuroblastoma, I knew I had to get more involved. “Between my mom and cousin, I have all the inspiration I need to join the fight against this terrible disease. My mom is currently on a break between rounds of chemo. My cousin is in the thick of it and has now lost all of his hair. When I'm running, it feels a bit weird to admit, but I cry a good amount. I picture the moment we handed our daughter to my mom for the first time - in the hospital right after she started chemo. I picture my cousin in a 12-hour surgery, and then in his Celtics blanket in the recovery room. I picture running across the finish line in April and hugging both of them, all the while hoping they'll be well enough to join me there. You can't find everything that you need to defy cancer in a medical textbook, and the staff at Dana-Farber understand that. That is why I wanted to do my part to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.” - Neil, running the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge this April

“I truly believe I am alive today because of the endless research being done at Dana-Farber,” Carly shares. “It’s a privilege to give back while paying tribute to my incredible support system.” When Carly first came to Dana-Farber for treatment of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and Waldenstr?m’s macroglobulinemia, she and her mother saw The Gene Display in the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care. "I was moved watching the lights change color while reading messages of hope, thanks, and inspiration.” Since then, Carly has named four genes in The Gene Display. “I first named a gene in honor of my dad, who passed away two months after my initial diagnosis of Waldenstr?m’s macroglobulinemia,” says Carly. “I’ve also named genes to honor my family: one for my mom to admire during our visits to Dana-Farber, another for my brother’s compassionate care of our parents until they passed. And one for my wife Nancy, pictured with me here, for her unwavering love and support through my cancer journey.” You can join Carly and honor a loved one by naming a gene in Dana-Farber's Gene Display. “My first walk was in 2009, and at that time, my dad had been a patient at Dana-Farber for many years due to a rare blood disorder. I walked for him in my heart while raising money for cancer research in general. As he became more ill and ultimately passed away, my involvement with the Jimmy Fund Walk became even more important to me.” “My dad loved life and lived a life of love. He was committed to making a difference in the world. One of the values he instilled in me is giving back to the community, and this is one of the reasons I walk in his memory. Dana-Farber did so much for him, and now it is my turn to give back to the institution that did everything in their power to save his life. Funds raised through the Jimmy Fund Walk are crucial to the research needed to understand rare disorders like my dad’s.” “While this rare blood disorder may have taken his life, it did not take his legacy. My son, Leo, is named after him, and Leo’s radiant smile and exuberance remind me so much of my dad.” – Katie, who walks in memory of her dad, Larry Dana-Farber is committed to caring for patients with all diseases, like Katie’s dad. Fundraising through the Jimmy Fund Walk helps researchers’ efforts toward advancing new treatments for rare and underfunded cancers and disorders. We walk together against cancer at the Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai Motor America on Sunday, October 5. #JimmyFundWalk #RareDiseasesDay

“In May 2022, I was diagnosed with oligodendroglioma, a grade 2 brain cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy treatment, I found myself at a crossroads in life. I decided I wanted to complete the ‘big seven’ Abbott World Major Marathons. Having run the New York City Marathon and Chicago Marathon in the past, my next goal became the Boston Marathon.” “When looking for a specific charity team to run for, I found Stacey. Stacey had written in a runner’s group that her husband had just been diagnosed with a rare brain cancer—the same diagnosis as me. When she told me her husband was receiving care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, it was a full circle moment. I knew I wanted to run for Dana-Farber's team.” “As someone living with a terminal cancer diagnosis, it's important to show other patients and survivors that you can thrive at any point throughout your cancer journey. It's about finding a purpose bigger than yourself when it seems like all else is lost. I can’t wait to meet Stacey along the course as she cheers us on this spring.” - Montgomery, running the 2025 Boston Marathon? for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team
