The electrical and computer engineering department employs small classes and hand-on laboratories taught by full-time faculty, to provide an environment highly conducive to both learning and to the development of close student-faculty relationships. As our department has evolved over the years, our goal is to provide students a rigorous curriculum containing theoretical and practical engineering concepts. Our engineering design is embedded throughout the curriculum to develop the student’s ability to address practical engineering problems. Fully equipped laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices, housed mainly on the third floor of Grimsley Hall, serve the active research in electrical and computer engineering.

Faculty Friday! Meet Michael Kelsch, one of our amazing adjunct professors and alumni! He grew up in North Augusta, SC, and he graduated from The Citadel in 1980 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, where he was a member of the Summerall Guards and a photographer for the Brigadier and Sphinx. After graduation, Mike received a commission in the U.S. Navy, becoming a Naval Aviator assigned to Attack Squadron 75 (VA75) flying the A-6E Intruder onboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). He later became a jet instructor pilot flying the T-2C. After eight years of active duty, Mike joined Delta Air Lines, where he enjoyed a 32-year career flying various aircraft, including the MD-88, B727, B757, B767, and A330. He served as a captain for 22 years. During his time at Delta, he earned a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering through the University of Idaho’s engineering outreach program. He has been teaching at The Citadel for about three years. Mike has been married to his wife, Julie, for 44 years. Faculty Friday! Meet Matthew Collins! Born and raised in Charleston, Matthew Collins is a proud alumnus of The Citadel’s Electrical and Computer Engineering evening program, and one of our amazing adjunct faculty. After graduating, he began working at Clemson’s Electrical Grid Research Innovation and Development (eGRID) facility as a test engineer, researching state-of-the-art wind turbine generators. Matthew has also served as a C4I systems engineer at Scientific Research Corporation and is currently a lead engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton. While working full-time, Matthew earned a Master of Science in Computer Engineering from Clemson University and a Master of Science in Computer Science from The Citadel, where he conducted research on critical infrastructure security in Dr. Banik’s CHARIoTS lab. In his free time, Matthew enjoys boating with his wife and fishing for the elusive, ever-larger redfish. #FacultySpotlight #FacultyFriday #TheCitadel

Faculty Friday! Meet Dr. Greg Mazzaro! Dr. Mazzaro been a professor at The Citadel for almost 12 years.?Before coming to Charleston, he worked full-time as a civilian electronics engineer for the US Army.?While teaching, he has worked part-time as a consultant for the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD (just outside of Washington DC).? Dr. Mazzaro's work (research, consulting) in a nutshell is inventing new forms of radar to detect and identify electronic devices, by exploiting different ways that electronics "misbehave" when they are illuminated by electromagnetic waves.?Some applications for this research are:?find an explosive device by finding its electronic trigger; detect a radio-frequency bug planted in a room ("counter-surveillance"), locate someone lost in the woods (carrying a cell phone, where there aren't any cell towers).
