There was a great turnout this week as the North Carolina Association of Community College Facility Operators (ACCFO) toured active construction projects in Forsyth County. A highlight of the tour was a visit to Forsyth Technical Community College, where The Christman Company - North Carolina Region Superintendent Travis Carter, PE, CHC shared his personal and professional insights. The group also had the opportunity to tour the Forsyth Tech Community College Transportation Center construction site, where, together with Michael Graves Design we are currently adding nearly 30,000 square feet to house new diesel bays, repair areas, and cutting-edge automotive repair and teaching labs. Uncovering History at the Balladeer Hotel Every building has a story to tell—sometimes, those stories are hidden in the most unexpected places. While replacing rotten soffit boards at the historic Sparger Building, our CSEC team discovered snuff bags tucked away in the exterior soffits—a small but powerful connection to the past. These artifacts serve as a reminder of the lives and traditions embedded in the fabric of this 1892 landmark. The Christman Company is honored to partner with the vibrant Mount Airy community to transform this historic structure into The Balladeer Hotel, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott International. More than just a hotel, The Balladeer is a celebration of Mount Airy’s rich cultural heritage—from its musical traditions to the craftsmanship of its granite quarries and textile mills. Our work is driven by thoughtful preservation and collaboration. Together with local partners, we are: ?? Restoring the exterior by removing infilled windows and installing aluminum replica windows true to the original design. ?? Preserving interior features like hardwood floors, brick columns, and timber construction to showcase the building’s historic character. ?? Reusing and revitalizing a key piece of Mount Airy’s past to ensure its legacy continues for future generations. Reflecting nature through architecture is no small feat, but when creativity meets craftsmanship, the results are stunning. On the Guilford County Schools Peck K-8 Expeditionary Learning School project, our collaboration with Metal Impressions brought this vision to life beautifully. President Renee M Sweeley captured the spirit of the work perfectly: "We are thrilled to have been part of this project! From intricate metal panels with holes and radius pieces to wood grain accents that seamlessly flow inside and out, we faced unique challenges head-on. One of the most creative highlights was crafting metal column covers to mimic tree trunks, blending nature’s elements into the design. Adding vivid accent colors to the canopies brought dynamic pops of energy, making the final outcome something truly special. We’re so proud of how it all came together—and the response has been fantastic!" A heartfelt thank you to all our subcontractors, who help us turn bold ideas into reality.
