But do you know what we don't talk enough about? What goes wrong. The horror stories. The failures that led to those successes. This puts SO much pressure on founders and beyond that it leaves everyone in the dark on what they should avoid doing. I am aiming to fix that with a sub-series of The Builder Circle by Pratik Podcast where I want to create a safe space for folks to talk about what went wrong, what they would have done differently, and how it can be avoided by others. Have you ever heard of Factory Acceptance Testing? You may have not because mostly existent equipment or simple ones don't really need it but if you are building custom equipment it's a MUST. Here's me at the corner of a factory at the end of a busy day to tell you about what an FAT entails! Some high level lessons to take with you as you go through this process is: ?? Have your specifications as your source of truth and test towards them ?? Make sure you have vendor buy-in on both specs and test plans ?? Have a split payment plan: upfront, after FAT, after SAT ?? 2 weeks ago I had the pleasure of talking about common hardware startup pitfalls and horror stories at Formlabs as a part of the Boston Hardware Meetup and it was an incredible experience. The most amazing part was how many people came up to me afterwards saying how relatable the pitfalls were. There is no shame in it, it’s nearly impossible to have a perfect approach to building a hardware startup but we have to be comfortable talking about what not to do. As I said in my talk #hardware should be accesible and successful because most of the hardest problems we face in this age require physical solutions. In order for that to be the case we have to talk about what doesn’t work, what failures we’ve learned from and how the next generation of builders can avoid them. I promise to always come to table with more stories I accumulate, honesty and practicality. This is my mission with my consultancy Pratik Development LLC. and my podcast The Builder Circle by Pratik.
