In “Homelessness in Focus: A Deep Dive into the Southeast Part I,” Executive Director Katrina Knight and Liz Carbone, the former Director of Community Engagement, explain how underlying factors contribute to increased homelessness and decreased health outcomes. ? While this episode was recorded in January 2024, almost a year later, USA Today reported that homelessness in the United States surged to more than 771,800 individuals, an 18.1% increase over 2023. ? Housing affordability and economic instability, two persistent underlying causes of homelessness, are not likely to improve given the current local, state, and federal economic and political landscapes. ? According to a 2024 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime research report (UNODC), sex trafficking of women and girls has increased by nearly 30% since 2020.
