关于我们
As the only ethics center within an academic institution focused exclusively on the financial services industry, the American College Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services’ mission is to raise the level of ethical behavior in the financial services industry through research and education. The Center is committed to helping individuals and companies be more sensitive to ethical issues and think more critically about solutions for the benefit of society. The Center's team of faculty, fellows, and scholars are often featured in the media, with insights and commentaries on current events published in a number of influential outlets. They skillfully intertwine modern ethical principles with current business trends, addressing pertinent subjects such as trust in financial services and the ethical dilemmas posed by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the financial services industry. The Center offers a Trust and Leadership Certificate Program driven by the latest research on trust, equipping home office leaders with the skills necessary to build and restore trust. The Center also fosters collaboration through its Alliance for Ethics in Financial Services, which is a community of corporate supporters who provide intellectual capital and philanthropic investments to advance the Center’s mission, as well as receiving other exclusive benefits. Additionally, the Center organizes an annual Forum on Ethical Leadership in Financial Services, established by James A. and Linda R. Mitchell. For over 20 years, this event has brought together industry practitioners and academic ethicists to discuss key industry issues and practical ethical challenges faced by executives. The Center also provides fellowship opportunities to researchers to explore diverse research topics at the intersection of ethics and financial services, including its signature Maguire Fellowship in Applied Ethics.

In a panel discussion during our AI Ethics in Financial Services Summit, our managing director Azish Filabi, JD, MA and?Sophia Duffy, JD, CPA, AEP?, associate professor of business planning at The American College of Financial Services, discussed the ethical and governance challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in the life insurance industry. Unlike traditional algorithms, AI's "black box" nature can obscure decision-making, raising serious concerns about fairness, accountability, and compliance with anti-discrimination laws. Key Takeaways: ?? AI systems may unintentionally result in unfair discrimination due to biased data or proxy factors. ?? Insurers face challenges in understanding and regulating these complex systems. ?? A framework for national standards, certifications, and audits is needed to ensure AI aligns with ethical and regulatory standards.
