It was great to run a Growth & Company workshop this morning with?Techstars on how to hire for growth and avoid the common 5 hiring pitfalls.... Here are the 5 takeaways: ?? Hands on vs strategic - Avoid hiring people unable or unwilling to be hands on when required - Use fractionals, freelancers and advisors to bridge the gap, and be clear on expectations with candidates (team, budget, hiring) ?? Case of the?ex - Ex Google, ex Meta, ex successful competitor is a poor proxy for a candidate's ability and fit? - Hiring the 5,231st employee at Uber isn't going to be the right person for your 20 person transportation startup. Look beyond the brand name to the skills required ?? Skill not knowledge - Industry knowledge is quick to gain, quick to become redundant, and less transferable than you think. Fintech experience in payments doesn't mean you understand the pensions market - Focus on hiring smart, driven and curious people, and augment them with veteran advisors/investors who have real industry clout ?? Hiring for now not IPO - The skills required of your growth leaders change rapidly as you scale - Hire people?to get you to the next stage not IPO. Some will thrive at the next stage too, but most won't and that's ok ???? Avoiding mini-mes - "I want to hire me but like 3 years ago" - Diversity of thought is critical to ensure you tackle problems from multiple?angles.
