We just bid adieu to our new friend Dan Carlisle of Massey Ventures in New Zealand! He came and spent a week with us here in Tucson to observe and learn from how we do things at Tech Launch Arizona. He was a fantastic guest, willing to dig deep, and asked great questions all along the way. Stay in touch Dan, we look forward to seeing you soon!
Two weeks have flown by in the USA, attending the #AUTM25 conference followed by spending a week with the team at Tech Launch Arizona. I've spent the day reflecting on the experience and so naturally I'm going to subject you, my LinkedIn colleagues, to some key learnings: ?? Commercialisation is a "contact sport" It's far too easy to rely on zoom and email to get things done, resulting in transactional meetings, rather than relationship building. Being from a small island in the bottom of the world, it's even more important to get on a plane, go meet people, and invest in building genuine connections - the deals can (and almost always) come later. This applies to internal relationships too. I learned that Tech Launch licensing managers spend dedicated time located in faculty offices, working, connecting for 1-on-1 meetings, and actively participating in that department's activities. This helps, not only connect with more researchers, but also to build more meaningful relationships and uncover new IP. ?? Expose yourself to serendipity AUTM was full of great sessions and courses, but the biggest opportunities came from chance conversations. You can't engineer serendipity, but you can increase your exposure to those chance encounters: Seek networking opportunities, strike hallway conversations, and focus on uncovering shared connections/relationship building, rather "selling". No one likes an unsolicited sales pitch. ???? One size doesn't fit all New Zealand has it's own unique ecosystem and scale of operations. Learning about best practice from other institutions was hugely valuable, but doesn't always translate perfectly. For example, hearing about one 70-person TTO's process for signing off an MTA, it made me grateful to be part of a lean and efficient team. In these cases, extract the important learnings, but focus on what best-practice makes sense to your organisation and ecosystem. Finally, a huge thank you to Doug and the rest of the team at Tech Launch Arizona for having me for the last week and sharing your approach to TechTransfer, including Licensing, Venture Development, Marketing, Finance, and Student Entrepreneurship (Startup Wildcats). But most importantly thank you for the inside scoop on all the best places to eat (turns out there are a lot)! I look forward returning the favour when you eventually come and visit New Zealand.
