Join us at ISGC-2025 (https://lnkd.in/eGKkiVFb) from May 12 to May 16th 2025 to meet Prof Paul Chirik (Princeton university), one of our confirmed plenary speakers (https://lnkd.in/eQ2rFA76) The Chirik group studies catalysis with earth-abundant transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) as alternatives to precious metals. Applications include industrial silicones, drug synthesis, chemically recyclable polymers and carbon neutral jet fuels. Many of these applications exploit the unique electronic structures of first row metals over their precious metal counterparts. If you want to be part of ISGC-2025, please create your account online at https://lnkd.in/eGKkiVFb The call for abstracts is now open and will close on December 15th. Join us at ISGC-2025 (https://lnkd.in/eGKkiVFb) from May 12th to May 16th 2025 to meet Prof Douglas MacFarlane Farlane from Monash University (Australia), one of our confirmed plenary speakers. His research focuses broadly on creating a genuinely sustainable nitrogen cycle. Current-day nitrogen chemistry relies on two heavily greenhouse gas producing reactions: the Haber Bosch process for the reduction of N2 to NH3 and the Ostwald process for the oxidation of NH3 to HNO3. An electrochemical or photo-electrochemical approach to both of the reactions is possible, based on renewable electricity, and his group and others are making progress in that direction. In the longer run the direct production of C-N bonds from N2 and CO2 is an enticing possibility. More information at https://lnkd.in/e_KaU_k4. Greener Nanobiopolymers and Nanoencapsulation: Environmental Implications and Future Prospects RSC Sustainability, 2, 2805-2832 (2024) To minimize the consumption of nonrenewable resources and ensure environmental sustainability, there ought to be greater utilization of abundant and renewable greener nanobiopolymers, particularly those derived from various plants and microbes. This article discusses the various types, origins, and synthesis methods of biopolymers, including those that come from natural resources and microorganisms, with a focus on their properties in nanoformat. In addition, discussion on various synthesis steps and structural characterization of green polymeric materials such as cellulose, chitin, and lignin is also incorporated. A comprehensive discussion of greener nanobiopolymers with illustrative examples has been presented for the last five years comprising their diverse types and topologies including the environmental improvements realized?via?the deployment of nanoencapsulation, especially the applications of polymer nanoencapsulated materials in wastewater and soil treatment. The emphasis on the use of greener nanobiopolymers for sustainable environmental remediation is specifically highlighted for the decontamination of soil, water, and air with the main objective being to offer an overview of their adaptability embracing nanotechnology. This effort could stimulate additional research in their deployment in practical environmental applications. Read the open access Tutorial Review article here: https://lnkd.in/g7EbiMY6

Can mining waste help mitigate the impacts of climate change by storing CO?? ?? Check out the latest study in #RSCSustainability that explores the use of a pH-swing process to optimize the extraction of calcium and magnesium from plagioclase feldspar-rich platinum group metal (PGM) mine tailings for sustainable CO? conversion and storage. ?? The authors Katherine Vaz Gomes, from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Pennsylvania and colleagues Caleb Woodall, Andreas Voigt, Kai Sundmacher, Jennifer Wilcox examine the extraction efficiency of different organic and mineral acids to determine their effectiveness in extracting magnesium and calcium from the tailings, with focus on the extent of extraction within each acid. In addition, to optimise acidic extraction, new “series” and “parallel” acid extraction processes are introduced. In the paper, they also report a series of carbonation experiments and then discuss the sustainability implications of their work and how it supports achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and mitigating severe climate impacts. ??
