If there’s one defining trend in American architecture over the last decade, it’s the rediscovery of wood as a construction material. Mass timber buildings—made from large wooden panels, columns, and beams—are rising across North America, with developers racing to construct the tallest wooden tower. A new contender, the 32-story Edison in Milwaukee, just broke ground and is set to claim the title of the tallest mass timber building in the Western Hemisphere. But why are American developers, architects, and builders all timberstruck? ?? Hear Columbia University professor and author Lindsey Wikstrom and DLR Group Principal Stephen Cavanaugh?unpack the potential of mass timber with Metropolis Magazine Editor in Chief Avinash Rajagopal: https://lnkd.in/eshSsZxC This season of Deep Green is produced in partnership with Mannington Commercial. We dive into the numbers—why do women make up 50% of architecture students but only 25% get licensure and even less than 10% are in leadership roles? Does it matter who leads? We discuss systemic barriers, the impact of workplace culture, and what it takes to create a more equitable future. Plus, Amanda shares insights on domestic inequality, generational shifts, and how the industry can drive real change. This season of Break Some Dishes is presented by Humanscale

How many canvas tote bags do you own? And how often do you use them each week? For how long do you keep them? How many packages were delivered to your home or office this month? What did you do with the box and wrapping once unpacked? Ever visited a manufacturing or distribution facility (or any big box retailer) and seen palettes piled high with product packed in boxes and wrapped in plastic film?? In Season 7, Episode 6 of FUTURE OF XYZ, we speak with a leading expert in reusable packaging about the current status of packaging waste in the world and efforts underway to help reduce that. From why the number of times we use that tote bag I asked about matters more than the fact we have it, to practical solutions that companies are already testing and implementing at scale – this is an even-keeled exploration about not only how we got here, but also how we can help fix the problem packaging waste has created for consumers, employees, and the planet alike! Our guest, Mike Newman is CEO of Returnity Innovations- dedicated to transitioning large commercial clients such as Target, Walmart, FedEx, Rent The Runway and Vuori away from single-use packaging into reusables. At the intersection of supply chain and sustainability, and working with partners like Closed Loop Partners and the US Plastics Pact, their stated goal is to “make single-use packaging extinct before we are”. The ‘Future of Reusable Packaging’ marks the 6-month anniversary of XYZ being Presented by iF Design and as a proud member of SANDOW’s SURROUND Podcast Network. The design industry is predominantly female—so why aren’t more women leading at the highest levels? If you’ve seen my recent talk on TED.com, you know advocating for women is something I care deeply about. And the numbers from ThinkLab’s US Design Industry Benchmark Report make it clear: 87.5% of design students are female 85% of the industry is female Yet, less than 40% of women make it to top management Where is the falloff happening, and why? I recently sat down with Verda Alexander and Jon Strassner to unpack this issue. It’s time to move beyond the numbers and into action. Listen in, and let’s talk about what needs to change. ?? .https://lnkd.in/dXABjyWS What are the biggest challenges you see for women in leadership in our industry? Let's hear them ??
