Stony Brook University’s AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers chapter recently attended the AIChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference hosted by the University of Maryland - Baltimore County. Every semester AIChE travels to regional or national conferences to compete in three competition teams (ChemE-Sports, ChemE Jeopardy, Chem-E-Car), present research, attend career and graduate school fairs, and network with students and industry professionals.
The ChemE-Sports students virtually competed in 4 rounds during the conference. Three teams competed and had a record-setting performance. All three teams tied for 1st Place in the Expert Round for Round 2,?and SBU Team 1 and Team 3 won 1st and 2nd place in the Master of Disaster Round in Round 3. All three teams tied for the Spring 2024 Safety Sorcerer Award. Although this year’s team was relatively new and inexperienced, the results obtained surpassed expectations and set high standards for the SBU Team going forward to the National ChemE-Sports competition in October 2024 in San Diego.
Next, the Chem-E-Car team debuted their new car, Catbus. The team had exceptional knowledge of their car mechanism and won 2nd place in the ChemE Car Poster Competition. This is the first time in 7 years that the SBU team has won this award. They are also still hopeful for a chance to compete at the national conference this upcoming fall in San Diego. The team also wanted to give a special note of gratitude to Dr. Nitodas, AIChE Faculty Advisor, who accompanied the AIChE team to the conference and also served as a Safety Judge for the Chem-E-Car Competition.
The ChemE Jeopardy team excelled in the preliminary rounds and made it to the semifinal round! They are excited to continue preparing for next year's regional competition.
Lastly, five students presented research posters at the Research Poster Competition. This opportunity allowed the CME and Chemistry departments to expand upon their accomplishments in research.
The SBU AIChE chapter will be traveling to San Diego in November for the National AIChE Annual Student Conference. The chapter is looking forward to participating in these competitions again with the support from Professor Nitodas and the Stony Brook University Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering.
