A successful weekend in Austin, TX with our student ambassadors for our annual retreat. From making connections with industry professionals, other DC students, and plenty of laughs, we can't wait until our next retreat!

Howdy, student ambassadors ?? Today kicks off our student ambassador retreat in Austin, Texas. These DC students will have the opportunity to network, join in on some fun activities, and learn more about the chiropractic field.

In 1954, Walton Russ, DC, became the first Black man to be a licensed chiropractor in the state of Arkansas.

Clarence Reaver opened the Reaver School of Chiropractic in 1945 after a Black chiropractic student, Dorothy Clark, was not allowed to enroll in the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1944 due to outrage from the student body (C. Keating 1999). The school remained open in Dayton, Ohio until 1951, when the International College opened, enrolling Black students into their program. An estimated total of 166 students graduated from the Reaver School of Chiropractic, two-thirds of whom were Black.

In 1947, Samantha P. Adams, DC became the first Black woman and chiropractor on the Ohio State Medical Board at the age of 21. For the next 33 years, she would be the only Black chiropractor in Toledo, Ohio.

Today marks the start of Black History Month. The chiropractic field has a long-standing history within the black community and if it weren’t for Harvey Lillard, chiropractic care might not be what we see today. Lillard, a black entrepreneur, was the first patient of Daniel David Palmer in September 1895. 17 years prior, Lillard had lost his hearing, and this prompted Palmer to perform the first ever adjustment. The story goes that Lillard’s hearing was restored, thus making the first adjustment a success. Throughout the month of February, NCMIC and Starting Into Practice will be posting tidbits of black history throughout the field of chiropractic care.
