Reflecting on an inspirational day at the?Digital Health Innovation and Biodesign Workshop, where minds from?Stanford University,?Hasso Plattner Institute, and?Charité - Universit?tsmedizin Berlin?came together in the spirit of innovation! Building on the shared visions between the Biodesign Digital Health Group, the?HPI Digital Health Cluster, and Charité, we built a pathway forward for solving pressing healthcare challenges. ?? Together, we explored how digital health can improve?mental health medication management,?preparation for waves of respiratory illnesses, advanced diagnosis for liver failure patients, and timely access to medical practice guidelines.?We had many intelligent minds devoted to scaling access to care. ?? From the insightful presentations to the hands-on group work, we were inspired by the group's commitment to?enhancing healthcare access, interoperability, and patient outcomes. Our team had the chance to visit gematik GmbH and meet the teams working on digitalization standards, infrastructure, and integrated systems. Building and governing digital health and healthcare IT at scale is challenging and requires coordination across all stakeholders. Open-source software and an open mind for collaboration and needs finding are essential aspects to address these challenges ??

The team of Stanford Biodesign Digital Health visited us in our Berlin office today. It was an inspiring two and a half days of?showcasing?our vibrant Munich ecosystem and sharing ideas about the future of #digitalhealth with Oliver Aalami, Paul Schmiedmayer, and Aydin Zahedivash. ?? Key highlights of the visit included: 1?? Several deep dive sessions with leading research groups exploring opportunities at the intersection of #digitalhealth, #AI, and #healthcare. 2?? A dynamic interdisciplinary workshop that brought together computer scientists, clinical experts, and domain specialists. We followed the Biodesign team's innovative, needs-driven approach to addressing healthcare challenges. We also had the opportunity to learn about the?????????????????????????????, an open-source tool designed to streamline the development of digital health solutions. 3?? Numerous networking opportunities with researchers, students, and innovators, all united by a common mission: to use?cutting-edge?technology to transform the future of healthcare. ? Building bridges between Technical University of Munich and Stanford University to scale access to care ?? Together with TUM Venture Labs, we hosted a workshop where students, innovators, and clinicians brought clinical needs from TUM Universit?tsklinikum Klinikum rechts der Isar and went through the highlights of the identification and invention steps of the Stanford Biodesign process, reviewed the Stanford Spezi framework, and formed plans to co-create new digital health solutions ?? We were captivated by the innovative work that clinicians and researchers are doing with remote patient monitoring, virtual and augmented reality, implanted smart devices, and AI applied to genetic, audio, and image analyses. There are numerous new opportunities to bring our groups together! ?? A huge thank you to Felicitas Eidenschink, the entire TUM Venture Labs team, Med-Dev, and Heinz Nixdort Stiftung for hosting us, UnternehmerTUM for forming this bridge between Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign and Technical University of Munich, and to everyone involved in making this visit successful. The future is bright! Thank you TUM Venture Labs for hosting our workshop and many other meetings to learn about the German health care system, digital health innovation and the future of medicine! ?? It is safe to say that we have planted many seeds for future collaborations ??

*Where it all began* Back in 2012, I became curious about how the apps running on my iPhone 4 were built and stumbled upon CS193P: Developing Applications for iOS, taught by Paul Hegarty at Stanford University. I started following the course remotely and still remember my very first app written in Objective-C: an app where I could input my exam dates, and it would calculate the remaining days to prepare for each exam. Little did I know back then that this would spark the beginning of an exciting journey in my mobile app development career. Long overdue for a social media update, yet today I’m happy to announce that since May 2024, I’ve been collaborating with the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign at Stanford University School of Medicine as a Software Engineering Consultant. I am supporting various projects in the area of digital health as an Android Engineer. It feels great to give back my gained experience over the years in mobile app development to the place where it all began — Stanford University. My full-time position at Seven.One Entertainment Group remains unchanged. I want to express my gratitude to Paul Schmiedmayer, Vishnu Ravi, MD, and Oliver Aalami for their trust and support throughout this journey. I’m also grateful for the warm welcome and the invitation to Palo Alto — meeting the team, exploring the Stanford campus, Silicon Valley, and visiting some of the tech giants in the area was an incredible experience. Proud to see the Stanford Biodesign Digital Health team’s work to help advance Parkinson's disease care! This research project led by Dr. Helen Bronte-Stewart at Stanford University School of Medicine proposes a solution to a long-time unmet need for clinicians— high-resolution metrics on Parkinson's disease to help monitor and treat patients beyond in-person exams. The Stanford Biodesign Digital Health team contributed to this project by designing a monitoring system that consists of a portable device called “KeyDuo” paired with a smartphone-connected platform that patients can use at home to measure the severity of their Parkinson's disease symptoms. This innovative approach not only enhances patient care but also provides clinicians with objective real-time data to make informed treatment decisions. This is a great example of multidisciplinary collaboration and a demonstration of how digital health innovations can democratize access to healthcare by making it possible for more people to receive care regardless of who and where they are. Congratulations to all team members involved in this research, including Paul Schmiedmayer, Vishnu Ravi, MD, Oliver Aalami, and the Bronte-Stewart lab, for their work on this impactful project.
