We’re wrapping up another incredible quarter of the?Building for Digital Health?course at Stanford with the amazing help from Oliver Aalami, Adrit Rao, Nick Riedman, Vishnu Ravi, MD, Paul Schmiedmayer, and Aydin Zahedivash! Our students tackled innovative projects alongside their mentors, pushing the boundaries of digital health solutions using?Stanford Spezi. As we continue this important work, we’re thrilled to travel to?Chalmers University of Technology?in Sweden to support the launch of?Digital Health Implementation, a new course in collaboration with the?Sahlgrenska Academy. Celebrating the conclusion of this year's CS342 Building for Digital Health course at Stanford University! Our teams of talented computer science and medical students collaborated with clinical faculty and industry partners to develop six innovative healthcare solutions using the Stanford Spezi open-source ecosystem of modules. Their impressive projects include: - Early prediction systems for neutropenic fever - Novel non-invasive detection methods for cardiovascular disease - Mobile interventions targeting childhood obesity - Addressing feeding challenges in newborns - Continuous, accurate cough measurement tools for chronic respiratory conditions The students overcame significant technical challenges, including developing their own on-device AI models, integrating data from novel Bluetooth devices, and creating intuitive, engaging user interfaces. I'm incredibly proud of their achievements and excited to see these solutions advance to clinical and research implementation. Next week, we're headed to Sweden to collaborate with Torbj?rn Lundh, Peter Kelly, MD, Stefan Candefjord and their team to launch a similar program at Chalmers University of Technology, marking the first time our course has been replicated internationally! “There’s a common question I hear about interoperability: ‘Why aren’t we there yet? We’ve been at it so long. How can it be that we’re not done?’ I’m constantly surprised by that question. In fact, I’d turn it around and say: ‘Why do you think we’d ever be done?” Last week, we hosted Brendan Keeler, interoperability and data liquidity practice lead at HTD Health, who is also the creator of "The Health API Guy", a newsletter on healthcare integration and interoperability with more than 7,000 Substack subscribers. In this lunchtime session, he explored the current landscape and future of healthcare interoperability, focusing on the infrastructure needed to facilitate seamless data exchange between healthcare organizations. He discussed key challenges, including regulatory barriers, network development, and the balance between ubiquity and technological advancement. The talk highlighted the role of AI in transforming health information exchange, emphasizing how AI-powered agents could enhance data accessibility and streamline workflows while also presenting new regulatory and ethical concerns. When families’ lives are upended by a parent’s cancer, Camp Kaleidoscope is here to make sure no child or family has to face it alone. But to make sure families are supported at no extra cost, we rely on our communities’ donations and help to spread the word! I am so honored to be a counselor for Camp Kaleidoscope because it’s more than just a camp. We’re a local community for over 120 children, and their families in the Bay Area, whose lives have been affected by cancer. Our mission is simple: to create spaces where kids and families can form lasting connections with peers who understand them. And, of course, to just have fun. Kaleidoscope provides a week-long summer camp for children 6-18 whose parent, or caregiver, has ever battled cancer—regardless of outcome. Throughout the year, we host regular events for families, children and counselors to stay connected. Counselors also make themselves available to support families and children in their everyday lives and important milestones. We stand by families through their brightest and darkest moments of this journey. Parenting through this is excruciating, but I’ve gotten to be vulnerable with other parents going through this thanks to this community. From Classroom to Publication! ???? Exciting news—our research, which began as a collaboration in Stanford’s Building for Digital Health course, has now been published in JMIR Formative Research! ?? Enhancing Distress Tolerance Skills in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa Through the BALANCE Mobile App: Feasibility and Acceptability Study This study explores the potential use of an application for teaching distress enhancement skills, contributing to the growing field of digital health innovation. This work reflects the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and the impact that hands-on, project-based learning can have in advancing real-world healthcare solutions. Thrilled to be heading to Sweden ???? later this month to help launch the first international adaptation of our Building for Digital Health course at the Chalmers University of Technology! Delighted that our unique approach to teaching digital health innovation resonates—the course has already reached full capacity.
