  • In case you missed the photos from our Rock 'n' Roll Auction, here are a few more highlights! The event brought together over 300 students, alumni, faculty, administrators, and friends for an unforgettable evening of community and fundraising. We sold a total of 93 lots through our live and silent auction blocks. That included a 2.2 lb jar of Nutella, which sold for $200! 🍫🎸 During the program, we honored Kiera LoBreglio '05 with the 2025 Erica B. Fine '82 Public Interest Champion Award and recognized Daniela Ras '26, Priscila Ruiz '26, and Kayla Dorancy '27 as our top three student solicitors for their outstanding efforts in securing donations. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we raised thousands of dollars to sustain our public interest programs and directly support our students in the year ahead. A big thank you to our Center Fellows — Bridget Murphy '25, Justin Gorgchuck '25, Sadia Kauser '25, Hannah Stubbs '26, and Sabrina Meristil '25 — for their extraordinary leadership and planning, the E-board of the Public Interest Law Students Association for their steadfast support, our Auction committees, all the student volunteers, the alumni and faculty who donated, and of course, everyone who bid high and often!

  • We’re excited to launch our alumni spotlight series with a feature on the Hon. Judy Kluger (Ret.) ’77. Judge Kluger currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Sanctuary for Families, a leading nonprofit in New York City that supports survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking through legal, clinical, and shelter services. The Public Interest Center is proud to have partnered with Sanctuary for Families through our Spring Break Service Program last year, where students gained practical experience while supporting the organization’s mission. Watch the video to hear directly from Judge Kluger about her career path and reflections on what this work has meant to her.

  • We ❤️ pro bono! Last week, St. John's University School of Law students participated in Pro Bono & Brunch—an event where students, faculty, administrators, and alumni came together to answer legal questions from New Yorkers seeking support from lawyers. Thank you to our attorney mentors—Professor Jennifer Baum, Professor ann goldweber, Anjelica Mantikas '18, Jeanne Ortiz Ortiz, and Erin McCormack-Herbert—for guiding students through the questions and working with our students to answer them. This event built on the momentum of our Pro Bono Working Lunch last fall and was led by two incredible students from the Immigration Law Society and the Family Law & Child Advocacy Society: Nicole Castillo Guiracocha and Nicole Cummins. We're proud to support pro bono—and even prouder of our students for stepping up.

This past summer I had the opportunity to intern at the New York City Commission on Human Rights, where I assisted attorneys with investigating claims of discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. During my internship, I was involved in every part of the investigation process, from interviewing potential victims of discrimination to making recommendations for probable cause. Thank you to SJU's Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program for allowing me to play a part in enforcing civil rights laws for vulnerable populations in NYC. St. John's Law Public Interest Center

During the summer of 2024, I had the pleasure of serving as a Legal Intern at New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Department. It was an insightful experience as I was assigned to Hon. Linnet Rosado. A moment that stood out to me was attending a mural unveiling at the Bronx County Family Court. The mural was the effort of a public art youth employment program, in partnership with the Creative Art Works group. It was an expression of engagement and outreach between the Court and its community. I want to thank the St. John's Law Public Interest Center, for awarding me a 2024 Summer Public Interest Fellowship, allowing me to pursue this experience. I would also like to thank the alumni who made this support possible, which is now the Ruth Calaman '97 Public Interest Fellowship. I look forward to returning to the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division, First Department, where I will have the pleasure of being sworn into the Bar for New York State.

Tonight at the Celebrating Women in the Law event, Rose DiMartino ‘81 announced that she will be sponsoring the She Rocks! Challenge as part of the larger 2025 Public Interest Auction fundraising effort! Rose’s goal is to support students seeking summer public interest work. For the second year in a row, she has offered to match the gifts of up to 20 women who fund half of a Summer Public Interest Fellowship. Since this year’s Public Interest Auction theme is Rock 'n' Roll, we’re calling our challenge She Rocks! At the event, she shared what the She Rocks! Challenge means to her: “We want to give every St. John’s Law student who wants to participate in a public interest internship the opportunity to do so. An important part of the mission of the Alumnae Leadership Council (ALC) is to inspire St. John’s Law alumnae to pay it forward. Giving back will make a difference in the lives of our alumnae, and in the career trajectories of our students.” To learn more about the 2025 Public Interest Auction, head to our web page at https://lnkd.in/eyZCzicJ #StJohnsLaw #StJohnsLawAlumnae #Rock4Justice St. John's Law Public Interest Center Alumnae Leadership Council

J.D. Candidate at St. John’s University School of Law

This past week, I had the privilege of volunteering with the Federal Public Defender's Office for the Western District of Missouri in the Capital Habeas Unit as part of the St. John's Law Public Interest Center Spring Break Service Program. Working on cases involving individuals sentenced to death was a rare and invaluable experience that deepened my understanding of post-conviction litigation and reinforced the importance of due process. Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to analyze extensive case records, research statutory amendments, and contribute to a clemency petition—gaining firsthand insight into the complexities of capital defense. This experience sharpened my investigative, research, and writing skills while allowing me to engage in meaningful legal work alongside dedicated advocates. I want to thank Jeanne Ortiz Ortiz, the Public Interest Center, and the Federal Defender's Office for organizing such a rewarding experience.
