How did the COVID-19 pandemic shape research in child care and early education, and what lessons can we carry forward?? ? A new publication titled “Child Care and Early Education Research during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned and Future Considerations”, featuring insights from SRI Education’s Margaret Gillis, explores the pandemic’s far-reaching effects on CCEE research.?? ? Researchers from nine Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE)-funded projects, gathered by Child Trends, discuss adaptations they made to continue studies amidst unprecedented disruptions. From shifting methodologies to maintain health and safety standards to rethinking participant engagement, these adaptations not only enabled studies to continue during a critical time but also opened new avenues for enhancing research quality.?? ? This brief highlights practical adjustments that could benefit future studies and offers the field a roadmap for resilient and adaptable research practices moving forward.? ? Virtual assessments for young children with disabilities have introduced new ways to understand and support their development, while also presenting unique but not unsurmountable challenges.? ? Kathleen Hebbeler, Senior Principal Education Researcher at SRI Education’s Center for Learning and Development, will present SRI’s research on this topic in the session, “Conducting Virtual Authentic Assessment with Young Children with Disabilities” at the Annual Bright Start International Conference in London, England on Saturday, November 23.?? ? As part of the INTECA project. Kathy and her team interviewed nearly 70 state and local administrators, practitioners, and families of young children with disabilities to learn about their experiences with virtual assessment.? SRI Education has been awarded a $33.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue leading The DaSy Center for the next five years, strengthening our commitment to supporting data systems that improve outcomes for young children with disabilities. Since 2013, the DaSy Center has been a trusted national resource, partnering with state agencies to enhance data systems for infants, toddlers, and young children under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This grant renewal allows DaSy to further improve data collection, streamline systems, and advance family engagement to ensure children with disabilities receive tailored support. Our commitment to optimizing outcomes for young learners remains strong, and we look forward to deepening our impact nationwide. In a new blog from the LEARN Network, SRI Education’s Keena W. uncovers that while teachers and school leaders are deeply involved in selecting educational tools, the voices of students, parents, and community members are often left out. This gap in the procurement process means valuable insights from those most impacted by these tools are missing from key decisions.?? ?
