The release of US seafood consumption data for 2022 from the National Fisheries Institute gives the first real glimpse into how consumers reacted to the strongest inflationary environment since the 1980s. Key takeaways: 1) The amazing increase in seafood consumption during the pandemic was no paradigm shift. It was all about consumers being flush with cash and not having many things to spend it on 2) Salmon and shrimp are expensive for many US consumers 3) Consumers are not trading down to cheaper seafood (tinned fish craze aside). They are trading OUT, to chicken. Even the pork industry won back customers with the Pork: Be Inspired marketing campaign by the National Pork Board. This cleverly tapped into ethnic food trends. Marketing strategies for proteins are important. Look at tilapia data, a cheap fish that is losing consumers, even amid the flight to cheap protein. This has a protein category that has no unified marketing strategy and is defenseless against baseless claims (the worse than bacon one, for example). This is partly why George Crocker and I (Matt Craze) wrote the US Seafood Consumer Sentiment Report, to figure out what strategies the industry can adopt to improve customer retention (www.sphericconsumer.com). It's also framed our work with the Global Shrimp Forum to build a marketing campaign to spur shrimp demand in the key US market.
