?? Meet Sanjana Chhantyal, one of our esteemed judges for the 2024 JCI TOYP Program! ?? ? As the Youth Solutions Program Project Lead at the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth (SDSN Youth), Sanjana is passionate about empowering women and youth through education, employment, and entrepreneurship. She leads two SDG-focused global entrepreneurship accelerator programs, fostering innovation among young changemakers in over 50 countries. ?? Sanjana is also the founder of the Next Steps Project, supporting aspiring students, especially young girls, and first-generation students with mentorship and scholarship guidance, and the co-founder of Stree-Shakti (Women in Energy), a project encouraging women to pursue green jobs in Nepal’s energy sector. As a Fulbright Scholar, Emory MBA graduate, UN Women Asia and the Pacific’s 30 for 2030 Youth Leader, USAID Youth Excel’s Global Youth Advisor, and Max Thabiso Edkins Climate Ambassador, Sanjana is redefining the future of youth-led impact. ?? “If we really want to transform our institutions into more sustainable ones, we need to think long-term and strategically. It needs to be a fully institutional initiative. It needs to be coordinated and it needs to be coherent.” So said UNESCO's Victoria Galan-Muros, PhD, at the closing plenary session of the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok earlier this month, which it was my honour to chair. She said most initiatives suffered from the same shortcomings: they were short-term, scattered, uncoordinated and incoherent. Sanjana Chhantyal, a youth project leader with the UN’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network, said universities were “never too small or too big to learn”. “We need leaders who have experience, expertise, ideas and insights to work collaboratively,” she told the forum. “The problems in our ecosystem are interconnected, so how do we make the solutions interconnected as well?” Kevin Dunn, provost of Western Sydney University university, said that if universities wanted to “talk to the world about sustainability”, they needed to assert their own credibility by ensuring that their water use and carbon emissions were “the best they can be”. The Global Sustainable Development Congress organized by Times Higher Education brought together 3,000 global leaders and innovators in Thailand last week to exchange ideas and explore solutions to accelerate the progress of sustainable development. The Congress was a gathering of optimists who believe that the world can be a better place and through our collective efforts, we can achieve that optimistic vision. I moderated an insightful discussion on how educators can fast-track green skills opportunities for students. The importance of partnership between Universities and employers to address the skills gap was discussed. The need to embed climate literacy in curricula was highlighted. In the panel discussion on bridging the knowledge gap on biodiversity systems, I shared insights on how educational initiatives can be implemented to ensure that sustainability is a key priority for everyone, irrespective of the field of study. The Congress was a great opportunity to highlight the contributions of youth innovators and share insights from my experience of leading UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Youth's SDSN Youth Solutions Program.
