Carbon credits are generated by projects that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. This is done by either removing CO2 or avoiding an emission that would otherwise have occurred. Each credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide sequestered or avoided. ??But what would a tonne of carbon dioxide actually look like? The world needs a balanced energy transition, one that maintains secure and affordable energy supplies as the world moves to net zero. For hard-to-electrify sectors like aviation, this is where sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) comes in. President of Shell Aviation Raman Ojha joined experts from Deloitte, Alaska Airlines and American Express Global Business Travel for the Reuters Plus: Decarbonising Business Travel webinar. The panel explored how industry collaboration is stimulating demand for SAF, and how blockchain-powered book and claim solutions like Avelia are driving its use and availability at scale. The vegetation covering around a third of the world’s surface is vital to maintaining the planet’s natural balance. It supports intricate wildlife systems and helps maintain a healthy atmosphere, by taking in CO2 and releasing oxygen. Nature-based solutions (NBS) comprise of activities related to the protection, creation or redevelopment of natural ecosystems, such as forests, grasslands and wetlands, to reduce CO2 emissions or capture CO2 from the atmosphere. They also benefit local communities, improving soil productivity, cleaning air and water, and maintaining biodiversity. A shoutout to Shell Ventures Chief of Staff Karinya Turnbull, who was named one of 27 women to watch in Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) northern Europe, by Global Corporate Venturing! Karinya, who is interested in the expansion of artificial intelligence in her line of work, advocates for better gender balance in CVC. She believes that diversity improves the understanding of risks and opportunities associated with the industry. These areas include capturing different experiences in decision making, enhanced team dynamics and expanded networks for deal flow. Shell Ventures works with startups and scaleups, across the energy, industrial, IT and transport sectors, from their early stages to growth phases. These minority investments help develop new technologies and disruptive business models that work to accelerate the energy and mobility transformation. Shell Ventures currently has a portfolio of around 90 companies that help lower emissions, electrify our energy system, help us gain data-based insights and provide innovative consumer solutions. These include GridPoint, Sunswap and Palmetto. Read more about Karinya here: https://lnkd.in/g69MuaVR #ShellVentures #CVC #EnergyTransition

And that’s a wrap! Thank you to the event organisers, panelists and delegates ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024, for facilitating four days of thought-provoking discussions on the future of energy, as well as the challenges, actions and solutions required to advance the energy transition. Collaboration is critical to achieving this, and we were grateful to have the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the evolving energy ecosystem at ADIPEC. These ranged from balancing business priorities with meeting growing energy demand to implementing low-carbon strategies, like scaling Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and driving high-integrity carbon markets, in the race to net zero. On the ground, the team met with key players, leaders and exhibitors to better understand current challenges and the growing portfolio of technologies that have the potential to advance decarbonisation efforts across all sectors. These conversations are critical as we work towards our goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050. Thank you once again to Anna Mascolo, Roslyn Aird, Bernhard Koudelka and Nick Osborne, for representing Shell Low Carbon Solutions. Take a look at some of our #ShellatAdipec2024 highlights below.

We were delighted to host Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) at Shell's Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam for an exclusive, up-close experience of our innovations within the #LowCarbonSolutions portfolio. From sustainable aviation fuel, biofuels and hydrogen, to plastic circularity and heavy-duty electric vehicle charging solutions, the group of industry practitioners attended a series of laboratory sessions and site visits to explore the technologies behind our range of projects. There were robust discussions around Shell’s capabilities and processes and the collective challenges we face in our decarbonisation journey. Ajay Mehta, Shell's VP of Engineering and Technology, highlighted how critical such cross-industry collaborations will be in growing the demand for low carbon solutions as we work towards a net-zero emissions future. A huge thank you to the ASCI team for attending and to our team at the Energy Transition Campus for facilitating an insightful and engaging visit.

Bio-LNG is a 100% biofuel that can be used as a drop-in biofuel, for existing LNG engines. Derived from renewable sources such as food and agricultural waste, it has an important role to play in hard-to-abate sectors such as marine. See the animation below to find out more about the production process.? #Decarbonisation #Marine #BioLNG?
Bio-LNG, also known as liquefied biomethane, can be made from a variety of feedstocks including manure, food waste and agricultural waste. At Shell, we partner with nearly 700 farmers in Denmark and the Netherlands to offtake their agricultural wastes and residues. These feedstocks are put in an anaerobic digestor where microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. This creates biogas, which is upgraded to biomethane and liquefied into bio-LNG. This process leaves behind an organic residual product known as digestate, which farmers can use to fertilise their fields. By converting waste-based feedstock to biomethane, methane emissions from decomposing waste material is avoided. Some regulations allow for these avoided emissions to be accounted as emission reduction benefits. The net effect is that, over the whole life cycle of fuel production and use, bio-LNG can offer up to 100% less greenhouse gas emissions compared to fuel oil* and help decarbonise shipping. ? Learn about the production process in our animation below.? ? Find out how we can enable your energy transition at: www.shell.com/marine ? Read our cautionary note here: https://lnkd.in/gi_wDYdR ? #Marine #Shipping #Decarbonisation #bioLNG *Regulations such as the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive or the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard allow for avoided methane emissions during fuel production to be accounted as emission reduction benefits. The International Maritime Organisation’s interim guidance on the use of biofuels states the carbon intensity of a biofuel cannot be less than zero. Greenhouse gas (GHG) refers to CO2, CH4, N2O. The reduced GHG emissions are calculated by comparing to a GHG baseline intensity of very low sulphur fuel oil at 92.6g CO2e/MJ on a well-to-wake basis. Life cycle GHG emissions include emissions from gas production, processing (purification and liquefaction), transport, distribution, and combustion.
